After Crying belong to the oldest Rock bands in Hungary. The band got formed in 1986, but the musicians started already playing music in the late 70's. So it doesn't surprise a lot that their roots are lying in the same decade. Although After Crying don't like that expression very much, they have to be considered as a Progressive Rock band. While listening to their live album which is also a kind of best of, it's obvious to hear out that especially ELP and King Crimson belong to the band's main influences. When After Crying try to sound as bombastic as their idols, their music is excellent. But this is unfortunately only seldom the case. More than once on this CD, too quiet passages are disturbing and there are also some passages where the musicians seem to get lost during their song. I also don't like very much that there are strong jazzy tendencies in some tracks. To me, 'Struggle For Life' is an album like a roller coaster as it is including heights and dephts. At least, you get at the end of the CD an excellent version of the King Crimson classic 'Starless', with John Wetton on vocals. 'Struggle For Life' got released in Hungary as a double-CD, the rest of Europe gets the essential version on a single one. |
