BoySetsFire have been one of the most important political bands from the United Stated
for quite some time already, but I only first heard them on their split-CD with Snapcase
where BSF showed that they were playing in an entirely different (and higher) league than
the somehow overrated Snapcase. "After The Eulogy", the new BSF-album, is showing
me for the first time the greatness of this band. If you think you know what emotional
punk rock means, you better listen to this record which will redefine all what you thought
you have been knowing in the past. BSF's music is an intelligent balance between furious
hardcore eruptions and very melancholic rock parts, which are emphasized by Nathan Gray's
voice. Gray must be the best punk rock singer around these days, and if the masses haven't
noticed this yet, it's probably because BSF's songwriting is more adult than that of the average
punk band and mostly because they have a very political message. A look at the links on their
homepage shows that these guys
belong to the communist-libertarian camp, but still their lyrics are not as direct compared
to a verbally aggressive band like RATM. Not that RATM's way of handling things is bad,
but I bet that BSF's lyrics can even touch an unpolitical person's heart. This is by all means the best punk hard core (or whatever) album I have heard since the early days of the Dead Kennedys, this is 100% pure emotionality, this is what I have always been waiting for in this genre, and any rating less than maximum would be an offense to this gifted band. 10 out of 10! |
