Charon's debut CD 'Sorrowburn' which came out in 1998 wasn't up to my taste at 100%. Although the five musicians from Finland knew already how to play their instruments, their sound wasn't very original and I remember having compared it to Sentenced. Surprisingly Charon have done great efforts on their second album, although they recorded in the same studio (Brr-Studios, Helsinki) and there has been no line-up change. Charon play a kind of melancholic or atmospheric Gothic Metal with a melodic and even slightly commercial touch. Songs like '4 Seasons Rush', 'Christina Bleeds' or 'As We Die' should be compatible to the masses and may get attention in the media. Another way to show how open minded they are is the integration of a cello in the songs, although this idea has already been used by Apocalyptica who are also a Swedish band. I also like the songs with the female opera singer Jenny Heinonen, because you don't have a rough male voice next to a clear female voice. It's astonishing how both singers can harmonize together. Charon are now a innovative Metal band and allow yourself to sink deep into the vastness of this album. |
