Dissonant View are one of those bands that released demo after demo, but who takes notice of
analog equipment these days, so after many years (probably nearly 10 already), they finally
recorded a DIY-CD with their so-called greatest hits. Well, if you have followed their way
in the past you know that they really have already some nice tunes, so this CD is filled with
more hit songs than you would even find on a Green Day or Bad Religion. I know the guys will
kill me for comparing them to those sell-outs, but DV are in fact a melodic punk band who is
not afraid to use beautiful melodies to emphasize the messages in their songs. OK, I read
through the lyrics sheet, and some are really cool, like 'Talking To Flowers' which is about
the situation when the husband stays home because the women had a good job, which is a perfectly
good point. But the title song 'End On A Plate' on the other hand is one of those radical
vegetarian songs, and I think it's lyrics like that make it so hard for them to justify their
position. Anyway, let's not debate here about that, but let's get back to the music... I like
the mix of very old stuff ('Monkey Island') with the newer songs like the final 'Department 11'
which is ended by a nice piano outro. I also should mention that they have a regular sax player
which gives the music some soul hints rather than ska. The only thing I might criticize is the
sound that sounds more like a well recorded demo tape than a CD, but then you get a whole load of
really cool songs, and the price of 15 DM or 10 US$ (including postage) is more than appropriate. Make your orders to Thorsten Hinrichsen, Brühlstraße, 6713 Ludesch, Austria, Europe. Take a look at their homepage or send them an e-mail. |
