The Hives are one of Sweden's most notorious rock'n'roll bands, and when I am using the term rock'n'roll, I mean the new trashy breed being so popular in Scandinavia at the moment. In contrast to bands like Backyard Babies or Hellacopters who find their acceptance mainly in the hard rock scene, The Hives seem to be rooted firmly in the punk genre. The twelve songs on this unfortunately very short album are mostly fast and dirty eruptions of sweaty and smelly punk trash rock with a greasy taint of garage. Hard to compare it to other bands, but by using a lot of dirty adjectives, you're doing the band fully justice. 'Find Another Girl', which is a Curtis Mayfield coverversion, might be the only smooth song on this otherwise hard rock'n'rolling CD. If you find this CD in a shop, ask the owner to let you listen to 'Main Offender' so that you get immediately the best side of The Hives. All in all one of the more refreshing albums in that kind of genre, but considering rising CD prices these days, I think that the short playing time justifies an 'only' 8-point-rating. |
