Just a look at the band's label Magna Carta tells you already that Ice Age are surely a Neo Prog Rock band. Only after a first listening, such great bands as Dream Theatre, Saga or Shadow Gallery immediately come into your mind. Definitely no bad idols, but Ice Age are on their second CD 'Liberation' never able to play only a single original note. From the technical or musical point of view, Ice Age are of course playing on a very high level, but to me, this can't be a substitude to originality or at least fun. Especially vocals, keyboards and guitars are sounding like lots of similar stuff you have already heard hundred times before. The only real good track is 'The Blood Of Ages' where Ice Age dare to play slightly harder. But only two songs later, you get with 'When You're Ready' a very annoying ballad. I suppose that Prog Rock fans may adore this music, but first of all, I'm not a big Prog fan, and secondly, when I'm listening to this music, I normally choose the original bands. |
