King's X belong already to the oldtimers in the Hard Rock scene and they have now released their 8th album in their 12 years band history. CD number 7 'Tape Head' was a very good album, as most King's X albums, and so I didn't expect much surprises from the Texan trio. But this time, I was wrong. The opener 'Fish Bowl Man' shows King's X from a unknown hard and modern side, an aspect that doesn't suit them too bad. Although most of the other songs go easier into your ears than the opener, lots of them have a slight psychadelic touch. This psychadelic side of King's X gets underlined by the strange cover artwork showing a man who has a light bulbinstead of a head an the very bizarre and hardly understandable lyrics; titles like 'Marsh Mellow Field' or 'Charlie Sheen' (this song isn't about the actor) don't seem to make any sense and reading the lyrics won't help you very much either. 'She's Gone Away' definitely belongs to the highlights of this CD, especially because of the harmonic multi vocal lines which King's X used already at their beginning. In general, King's X are able to find a perfect midway between heaviness and harmony, and this unique mixture makes out the whole charme of this great band. It's good to hear that King's X sound again as fresh as in their early beginning. |
