I had nearly given up hope for 'The Reconciliation - The Third Of A Trilogy', the third and also last Lifeless-CD. For those who still don't know it: Lifeless is the one-man-project from Marc Kieffer. Since his first demo tape several years ago, he showed that he was not only a very technical musician, but also someone who knows how to write good melodies. The first CD sounded somehow like Death, the second one was more progressive, and the new one goes into a new direction again. Marc has dicovered keyboards, and he sure knows how to use them. There's even a female vocalist around, but don't be scared now: Shlomit Butbul (apparently her real name) is a trained jazz singer from Austria, and she has a gorgeous voice. Is Lifeless going gothic now, with all the keyboards and female vocals? No way sir! Marc Kieffer is exploring a musical direction which existed already before in death metal and which was made popular (well, not really popular) by bands like the late Pestilence, Atheist and Cynic. Cynic will be unattained forever, but taking a wild guess, I dare say Lifeless come in second.
There are in fact only 9 songs on the albums, the 9 last tracks are the demo remixes which are quite different (which means rougher) from the final mix. These 9 songs are divided into 3 chapters plus an epilogue. The opening song 'My Audience' is not only the most mature songs Lifeless has ever written, its lyrics are also a fair summary of what Lifeless has been. The songs are all like going one into another, so that it's not always easy to distinguish where one song stops and another one starts. 'I Sell My Soul' is even sounding somehow orchestral. What I like about Lifeless is that he knows not only how to play the instruments, but also finds an equilibrium between the different instruments. And the keyboards are really interesting. If you like your death metal innovating, you can't get past this great masterpiece. It's just a shame that it's the last of the trilogy.
