The cover artwork (sweet Asian girl in a Dutch soccer shirt offering a plate of Tofu) makes you expect fun punk in a very immature way, but don't let yourself be fooled: Solarisis is a one-man-project of Gijs van Ouwewerk (can a name sound Dutcher?) whose direction can roughly described as death metal, although there are a lot of other influences present in the songwriting. Gijs is responsible for all the instruments, which is wonderful when it comes to the guitar and bass sections, but the keyboards sound not too original, and especially the synthesized drums take a lot of the atmosphere out of the music, which is a bit of a shame, because there are some really well conceived tracks on this Tofu CD. The first highlight is the very pop sounding 'My Fair Share Of Solitude' (hello, Depeche Mode), but also the faster 'Under The Sun' has some hit points. The ditty 'Bootje Varen', probably interpreted by Gijs' son, is very strange and somehow out-of-place, but in a funny way. Another highlight is 'Bace Me To Eden' which has a very straight-forward chorus. It's astonishing how well Solarisis is knitting hit singles on the one hand, but then being not able to have a fat production makes it hard to perceive the depths of this album after the first listening(s). I had to listen 4 times in a row to the CD until the songs stuck to my mind. The playing time of only 33 minutes is of course also not too high, why I can't give more than 7 points to this nice effort, which would really have been a classic if there had been more songs and a better production. |
