Since alternative rock has been the new big thing in Luxemburg, we have been lucky not only to experience a new wave of new talented bands, but to make things even better, most of these bands have their own little style so that the movement doesn't sound as uniformistic as the former metal and hardcore hypes. Torpid are still a quite young band of three guys in their early twenties, which is old enough to have already a mature musical background but still not too old to kick some serious ass. As they are only three people, their music is simply basic guitar, bass and drums alt-rock, with a singer who is a native Englishman, which prevents Torpid from having that bad accent so many other Luxemburgian bands have.
The first thing to notice when you insert the CD into your CD-player is the very long playing time. With an average of 5 minutes per song, Torpid know how to put not only structure into their songs, but always leave enough space for improvisation. Call it post-grunge, post-rock or post-what-ever-you-want, but this is alternative rock as it is meant for the new millenium. No commercial compromises, but rather experimental Sonic Youth-like structures, although Torpid's music still comes mostly from the belly and not from the mind. Too bad these guys are not playing many concerts these days, but there's always this really cool CD you can order at the following address:
Gilli Milligan, 91 rue de Luxembourg, 8077 Bertrange, Luxemburg (Europe).
