It's always fun reading new names for Heavy Metal. In fact, Virus 7, which is a side project by Hank Shermann from Mercyful Fate (the guy who was one of the most horrible posers in the 80ies) are playing Street Metal. In more familiar words, Virus 7 are playing a kind of Neo Metal, enriched with lots of grooves and hooks. Hank Shermann decided to take Edgar Paul Allen (ex-Original Sin) as a singer. And that's unfortunately the weak point of the band. His voice is sounding too much like Crossover music, and I even think that he's obviously trying to copy Stuck Mojo, not one of my favourite bands. The songwriting is not exceptional, but very good and solid Heavy Metal. I prefer the few melodic songs like 'You Better Believe' or 'True Pain' which show Virus 7 from a more classic Metal side. Most of the songs from this debut are to my ears just to trendy. Although Virus 7 has two Mercyful Fate members (Shermann, Bjarne Holm), I prefer their original band to this one. |
