Build-A-Bug

Build-A-Bug

Mathematics

* Create a series of bugs, each with a specific number of features, e.g. Number 6 Bug has 6 legs, six eyes, six ears etc.

* Have each child in the group create a bug. Print them out and create a bug mural. You could then have an "Eye Spy" type activity e.g. "I spy a bug with 6 eyes and 2 ears".

* Group the bugs using different catagories to show that we can group objects in different ways. Group by the number of legs first, and ears second etc. You may also group the bugs using the types of faces the students have consen.

Language

* Give your bug a name and create a story about how he/she/it lives, why it needs so many tails etc.

* Following Directions - Have students create bugs following your directions as to the numbers of various features and/or faces. The students can arrange the parts as they wish, and the variety of bugs created using the same instructions should prove interesting.

Fine Motor

* Use modelling clay, pipecleaners, stick-on eyes and toothpicks to make your own bugs. The skills involved will include rolling logs, rolling balls, pinching, pushing etc.

* The Manual gives a healthy "Together Time" activity of making "Yummy Bugs". We have our own unhealthy version where we use various shaped sweets (e.g. jelly beans, smarties). We make a "sausage" of lollies wrapped in cling wrap. We then use pipecleaners to make legs betweent the lollie joins. The result may rot teeth, but we don't do it every day. They make cute gifts too. A cardboard cut our face may be used for the head.
