Little, Middle, & Big

Little, Middle, & Big

Language

* We used this activity when exploring "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" during our Fairytales theme. We looked at which bear would be which size and then matched up shoes. We also did the reverse and had the children match bowls, chairs and beds to the characters in the shoe shop.

* Use dress up clothes for the children to try on. Have clothes their size, adult clothes and doll or baby clothes. You could then have the children group the clothes.

* Drama - Set up shop with the clothes in the above activity and role play the "Shoe Shop" scene. The teacher or an adult may need to take on the role of "Big" and you may need a doll or a little brother or sister for "Little".

Mathematics

* You could use play money in your shop for the Drama activity above. Have the children price the clothing with the larger items being more expensive. (It may not work that way in real life, but this is just for the exercise!)

* Have students trace around their feet. Cut them out and write their names on the feet drawings, and then as a group put them in order of size.

* When doing the above activity, have the students examine their shoes for the size and write them on the cut-outs. You can then make an interesting bar graph of shoe sizes. The students can then use the graph to answer questions such as "How many people have shoes size X?", and to find the most common size. This is a good way to practice organising and interpreting information. It would be interesting to have the children comment on the graph before being asked any questions about it. Write a report on the findings.
