Sammy's Sorting Station

Sammy's Sorting Station

Language

This module gives students an opportunity to explore the genre of directions. I find it an interesting exercise to have students give as well as follow directions.

* Make series of cards with letters of the alphabet, words and sentences. Have students sort them into appropriately marked containers. I have found this useful for helping students learn some of their pre-reading concepts.

* Sort objects from the 3 Bears' House into sizes - big, medium or small. You can find physical objects or some pictures. You don't need to limit yourself to chairs, beds and bowls. Try spoons, hats and shirts. This activity worked very well with our "Fairy Tales" thematic unit.

* Sort words that rhyme, words with the same inital sound, or any element you wish.

Mathematics

There are many commercial sorting puzzles, games and activites available. We also enjoy using eveyday items.

* Before a cooking session, have the students sort the items into utensils and ingredients..

* Present a variety of objects from two (or three) different rooms in a house, e.g. a bathroom and a kitchen. Have the students sort the items by the rooms they would be found in.
