Sammy's Workshop

Sammy's Workshop

Language

This module gives students an opportunity to explore the genre of directions. I find it an interesting exercise to have students give as well as follow directions.

* Write instructions down in a variety of forms, e.g. complete sentences or with diagrams.

* Identify where instructions can be found on different items, including food packages, laundry washing instructions, assembly instructions.

* Have students create an object using building materials and then instruct you in building the same object.

* Create a "How To" book with students choosing projects, writing the instructions and illustrating.

Mathematics

The Workshop activities give children an opportunity to explore spacial concepts.

* Create your own blueprints for constructions. Any material can be used, e.g. modelling clay, building blocks, empty boxes. Have children work in pairs to create the blueprints and then assemble them.

* Make a picture using shapes and have students try to copy it.
