A Day in the Life
What an exciting life we're leading.   (Takes your breath away!)

January, 2005 - Jean, Dave & Boris Vacation on South Padre Island

The lighthouse at Port Isabel on the mainland.

This is one of the first sights to come into view as you arrive in the city.  It stands by the bridge leading to South Padre Island.

Here we are with our hosts - Jean's sister and husband - at the welcome sign to South Padre.

This is the view from the porch of the condo.  Jean's sister and her husband had rented the place for the month of January, but we were only able to spend a week with them.

A day on the beach.

We had one chilly weekend, but most days it was sunny with temperatures in the low 80s.

On our first trip to the beach, Boris didn't want to leave.  When I tried to get him to come with me, he dug his pawas into the sand and tried to stay.

We didn't tell anyone that we were going to South Padre.  So the first thing we did when we arrived was to take a photograph of Jean under a palm tree and email it to all her siblings.

Took them totally by surprise!

Winter... Brrrrrrrr!

See the home page for a photo of what this area looks like in the summer.  This winter, it took a bit of a chill.

The fish came through fine, though.  I don't know how they do it!

Good friends --

Rich, Nancy, and Bev with Jean.

Rich and Nancy were in town for a bit, so we all celebrated by going out to lunch.

December 5, 2003 - A Surprise Party for Jenn!

We're all so proud of Jenn!

She just completed delivery of her Ph. D. dissertation to her committee.

To celebrate, we set up a surprise party that caught her completely unaware.

November 21, 2003 - Dave & Boris go to Scopeville

Scopeville, also known as Kansas Astronomy Village, is a 15 acre patch of land in southeastern Kansas that is owned and managed by a small group of Kansas City amateur astronomers.   It is 70 miles south of Kansas City and about 20 miles from the nearest small town.  So the skies are really dark!   As a "Friend of the Village," Dave is permitted to go to Scopeville any time during the year to camp and observe.   The weather forecast for the night of November 20 looked really good, so Dave and Boris packed into the Phasar and off they went!

We knew it was going to be a good night
when it started with this glorious sunset!

All set up and ready to go!

The Phasar made the 70 mile trip in fine style.  I had replaced the timing belt prior to our trip, and was pleased that the engine ran so well.

We arrived about 3 in the afternoon, set up the scope, and settled in with a cup of green tea to await darkness.

Dave's UFO

This photo was taken through the telescope around 7:30 in the evening.  To the naked eye, they looked like aircraft landing lights.  But why were they red-orange in color?  And why were no other navigation lights visible?

July 10, 2003 - Backyard Plumage

Day lillies, cone flowers (echinacea), hostas.
and black eyed susans are in full bloom around the water garden.
We're leaving this picture up to give us courage to make it through winter!
