"Shape Of My Heart", the first single from Jive recording artists Backstreet Boys' latest album, Black & Blue, has broken the record for most weeks at #1 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary (AC) chart with an amazing stay of fourteen (14) weeks. This eclipses the previous record of thirteen (13) weeks shared by Celine Dion and Toni Braxton.
This feat also ties the record for longest stay at #1 on any Canadian Radio chart, matching U2's "Beautiful Day", which holds the record on the Canadian Rock chart. It had previously set the record for fastest ascent to #1 on the AC chart, reaching the pinnacle only four (4) weeks after release. It was #1 on the Quebec AC chart for eight weeks.
On the Canadian Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) chart it holds the record for highest-ever debut at #3, shattering the previous record of #10 set by U2. It went to #1 where it stayed for four weeks. It also holds the record for most first-day spins on CHR Radio, as measured by Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), who compile Canadian Radio charts based on detected spins, or plays, on Radio stations across Canada. In 2000, Backstreet Boys held the #1 position on the CHR and AC charts a combined nineteen weeks.
"Shape Of My Heart", produced and written by Max Martin and Rami (co-written by Lisa Miskovsky), was released via satellite to Radio at 11:21 PM on Tuesday, September 26 and has been a mainstay on Canadian Radio for seventeen weeks. The accompanying video reached #1 on MuchMusic, MusiquePlus and YTV.
The album's second single release, "The Call", is currently at #11 on the CHR chart after only six weeks of release. The video is in heavy rotation on MuchMusic (where it has been the "Big One" for three weeks) and MusiquePlus, and debuted at #3 on YTV's "Hit List".
Black & Blue, Backstreet Boys' fourth Canadian album, was released on Tuesday, November 21, entered the Canadian album chart at #1 and holds the first week sales record in 2000 for the number of units sold, as tabulated by SoundScan, selling in excess of 150, 000 units. In less than six weeks of release it became the sixth biggest selling album of 2000 and is now seven times Platinum, commemorating sales of over seven hundred thousand units.
Backstreet Boys is the only group in Canadian history to have three consecutive Diamond albums, commemorating sales of over one million units.
