September 4, 1997: Faith

The points of discussion:
1) Do you love it or hate it?
2) Does it bring back memories?
3) Any relevant experiences involving the song?
4) What do you think the song is about?

Faith:

"Faith", the official single that launched George's outrageously successful solo career, is perfect as our first ever song of the week. "Faith" is perhaps one of George Michael's catchiest and memorable songs. With a simple production and a catchy optimistic beat, "Faith" is a classic George Michael, still receiving airplay today!

Faith on the Charts:

UK: #2
US: #1 (4 weeks)

One of the greatest pop songs of the 80's, what a harp back to Motown and the 50's and 60's... my most vivid memory of "Faith" is sitting in a car with friends going out on a Saturday night (I was 17) when it came on the radio and all of us singing at the top of our lungs (including those guys who repeatedly denied liking George Michael).

I honestly do not like the song 'Faith'. It's too rockabilly. But, when it first came out, I was just happy that George had a new album coming out, because I'd anxiously been awaiting his first solo effort. Like George said at the time, 'Faith' is about his renewed optimism.

Faith is one of my favourite songs of George's. It's simple & catchy, with great rhythm and style. I put it in the same category as Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - a be-happy feel-good kinda song, and there's never too many of those. I also associate the entire "Faith" image around this song, and I think it was a great era for George. I loved the blue jeans and 5 o'clock shadow look, and I think of George like that whenever I hear the song.

I think that faith is one of george michael's best hits ever, its simple rock n' roll music make it a classic which,in my country lebanon,is played every week several times! george says that the song was inspired by a couple of relations that failed, this song is way out of the 80's,it belongs to the golden era of elvis and the beatles along with "look at your hands", it clearly reveals to us the greatness of his music!!

I love the organ strains at the beginning....George was very clever to incorporate a part of a VERY popular Wham! song into one of his first solo releases! Go George!

In reply to Bryan's "Song of the week", "Faith";

I much enjoyed it. Does it bring back memories? No, but it's bound to, someday as it applies to my present state of affairs. Any relevant experience? Yes, but none I wish to discuss as this exp. is personal in nature "I've gotta have Faith" in a better day and I know the day will come when....This song reminds me much of Madona's "You'll see...Somehow...Someway... Out on my own..." What song was about? Someone who'd prefer to stay alone than in bad company, awaiting "the One" who is for them, having faith he/she will show,... someday...

When I hear the word Faith I automatically remember back to the first time I heard it. I was with my boyfriend (now husband) at the time and we were actually having ... for the first time. We had the tv on, it was about 2am in the morning, and I was laying there thinking geez, that sounds like George, so I peeked over my husband's shoulder and I couldnt believe it. Ipushed my husband off...and just stared into the TV (nice wife arn't I). After the song finished I kept raving on about George, didnt he look great, what a great song etc etc. My husband was horrified and didnt speak to me for about a week.

It was at that time that he started to literally hate George and I can't say I blame him. Looking back what a horrible thing to do. How insensitive...but well...it was George and I know all you other fans would understand ( I hope!)

Faith brings back great memories of me and my friends hamming it up on the dance floor, even the guys jumped up with us and we all pretended to play guitars. Memories keep flooding back every time I hear it.

On a final note my husband has got over his hate session with George and he looks forward to hearing all his new material come out. Also I dont think he would appreciate me filling you all in on our intimite times together buy hey...hes not going to find out is he....

Fiona.

Hi! This is really great idea. I would love to read opinions of the other people about the song and compare it with mine. Faith, you say... Well, it is fairly simple in my case. "Faith" was the first song I fell in love with. I was lucky, I guess, cause for the first time I saw the video and heard the song simultaneously. And this is incredible memory and experience - I didn't know before that such a feelings exists... But you don't believe in the love at the first sight, too, until you experience it. I believe in love of this kind now. And I have fallen in love with a different songs since, but the first love is always special...

Dear Bryan,

Although I have never been a fan of the unhealthy relationship that this song supports, I have always found the video intriguing as well as the symbolism from it demolished later in Freedom '90. I know that George doesn't care to do videos, but this one was wonderfully orchestrated and as always he looked particulary "hot" in it.
As far as what the song is about, it is quite simple. It's the typical one way dirty road mentality of a man who wants sex from a certain woman, is totally turned on by her and wants her. In the back of his mind, he is reminded when he did something stupid like that before and how that sexual object of his desire stomped all over his emotions and "heart." This was probably because like him, she was using him just the same as he was taking her--as an inatimate sexual object. It just goes to show that any "relationship" that is began with sex will end without it in the end. Sorry, not my cup of tea. His "faith" as he puts it is sadly mistaken as that. In the Psalms, Scripture says do not make princes the designs of your salvation. I think princesses are included in this. To have faith in someone will only be fruitless. Faith is only something attainable through a spiritual commitment, and one night stand sex will not help you find "Faith," but AIDS or pregnancy or goodness knows what else. Sermon's finished, Mae

1) I like it, but it isn't one of my favourites.
2) Yes, when I was a little younger and used to go to the disco.
3) No.
4) I think it talks about patience. He wants the girl but the girl doesn't make up her mind.
