Chris Connelly: Thank you. Yes, we're here in Los Angeles, in the studio with the men of Korn, who are nominated for nine Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, for "Freak on a Leash." How does it feel, gentlemen?
David Silveria: Great. Wonderful. Fieldy [singing]: "It feels like..." Jonathan Davis [joining in]: "A real-live fantasy..." Fieldy: "Like you, or me..." That's what it feels like. Jonathan: Finally we got recognized, and the video got played a lot, 'cause it was such a good video. David: What it was, is that "Freak on a Leash" was the one that had the least amount of bandmembers in it. That's why people finally liked it. We're barely in the video, and it went good. Chris: Is there one [nomination] in particular that means a lot to you? Video of the Year, would that be the nicest one to take home? David: Or the Viewer's Choice. All: Yeah. Fieldy: Yeah, we'll take [that.] We're cool with that. Jonathan: I think Viewer's Choice is better... but Video of the Year would be nice. Fieldy: I want all nine of them. Chris: So how is the record coming? How close is it to being done, and how do you feel about what it sounds like so far? Jonathan: We're about how long, a month away? Fieldy: The record's gonna come out anywhere between end of November, beginning of December. David: Sounds like the music is a little more simplified and heavier. Kind of heavier grooves, more than the last couple. So kind of more similar to the beginning, except Jon is a much better singer now, so it's all coming together. Jonathan: We always say it's heavier, and we'll always say it's, oh, it's like the first album. That's the only thing we can really say. You're just gonna have to hear it. Fieldy: Jon played drums on one of the songs on the album. Chris: Why'd you want to play drums on this one? Jonathan: Um... Dave was sick, and... I dunno, it was fun. I like playing drums. [All laugh] Jonathan: I like beatin' on sh**. It's a good feeling. Chris: I heard for a while you were naming the songs after '80s bands. What kind of names did you give some of the songs originally? Fieldy: "ZZ Top." Jonathan: "The Cars." Fieldy: "The Bangles." Jonathan: "Living Color." David: "Steely Stones." [Laughter] Munky: Which was Rolling Stones and Steely Dan put together. Head: "Ozzy." All: "Ozzy." Jonathan: What was it? "Ricky Martin." Chris: Oh, that'll be nice. You can share that with him. David: It's a dance tune. Munky: But we incorporated that into a song called "Helloween." Fieldy: "Ricky Martin" turned into "Helloween." It used to sound like Ricky Martin, and now it sounds like roooagh! Chris: Do you still feel competitive with other bands, or with yourselves, in terms of wanting to top yourselves from last time? Jonathan: We're at the forefront of the whole thing. We broke the thing wide open, so we're always competing with ourselves. I don't think it's so much other bands, 'cause most of those bands that are in the same genre as us, we're friends with, so it's not really a competition thing. Fieldy: We ain't trying to be number one or be this big band or anything, because for one, this guy [indicates Jon] cusses all over the record. So it's not like we're trying to be a pop band or anything. It just kind of happened. David: I think it's kind of funniest that we came from no support to nine nominations. That's kind of funny. Chris: That's like going from zero to 60 in four seconds. Jonathan: It just rips your head off. You just don't know what's going on. But we're happy. We just like making music, man.
