Bishop's Falls was founded in 1909. It was named after Bishop John Inglis, who visited the area in 1827. It was developed because of its location. It is located in central newfoundland. The train in the picture, I believe was the last train ever to pass thought Bishop's Falls, before the railway was taken out of Newfoundland.
In 1893 the construction of the Newfoundland Railway had reached the Exploits River and the first trestle was built across the river. In 1897 this trestle was destroyed by ice and another trestle was built which was also destroyed by ice. In 1901 a new trestle was built upstrean, it is the longest railway bridge in the province and it spans 727 feet and it remains there today.
In 1943 a railway station was built. In 1949 after confederation, the railway became part of the Canadian National Railway System. In 1952 a dispatching office was built and all traffic between Bishop's Falls and Port aux Basques was controlled from Bishop's Falls. In 1988 the railway closed.
Bishop's Falls was named one of the best places in Canada to live by the town seach guide.
The population of Bishop's Falls is around 4200 people, Bishop's Falls is located on the exploits river, in the Exploits Valley in Central Newfoundland.The Exploits River provides some of the best recreational fishing in eastern Canada. This is a good place to go if you like to salmon fish.
Bishop's Falls is knows as the Hub of Manufacturing Activity in Newfoundland. They are known as this because of the wide variety of businesses located in Bishop's Falls. It is a good place to do bessiness because we are centrally located.
This is the Exploits River and located along it's banks if the Falls View Municipal Park.The park was built after the flood in 1983. It consist of 12 campsites that are suitable for trailers and tents. Each site has a barbecue pit and picnic table. The park has two gazebos and the park is normally open from the 1st of June to the 1st of September and is staffed 24 hours per day. If you are every in Bishop's Falls during Bishop's Falls day, stop at the park to see the fireworks.
In 1984 Bishop's Falls built a Recreation Complex to host the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games. The complex is located behind the Town Hall and there are tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, a soccer field, a track , a basketball court, plus a place to go skate boarding and the arena There is even a playground located in the Recreation Complex. With another two in different parts of the town.
If you are in Bishop's Falls in February, stop by The Lion's Winter Carnival. This Carnival last for 10 days and it became an annual event in 1985. The carnival features a Little Miss and Mister Pageant, along with a number of other activities.
