Do you have family that lives on the mainland ( for thought who don't know that is anyone who does not live in Newfoundland ) or are you a person who has family in Newfoundland, Let me ask you a question depending on which you are: When you come home to Newfoundland or your family comes home, when they or you are ready to leave what is something they or you all take back to the mainland?
Of Course what else could it be. There are few places around that have food like Newfoundland. I know when my family comes to visit they take back Vienna Sausages, any meat they can get such as rabbit, moose, carbiou or salmon and of course hard bread. But while they are here they have to have at least these three meals Jigs Dinner, Fish and Brewis and Pea Soup. They can't leave without having one of these meals.
Soak Salt Beef to get rid of some salt, drain water and add fresh water (if desired). Cook Salt Beef and peas (for peas pudding) for about 45 minute to 1 hour. Add vegetable, (carrot, turnip, cabbage, turnip greens), cook for 30 minutes. Add potato's cook for 20 to 30 minutes. Add dough boys, cook for 20 minutes. To make dough boys - put a cup of flour in a bowl, 1 tablespoon of baking power and cold water, mix together. Separate and drop in pot.
Soak Hard Bead over night. Bring to boil. Drain water. Boil some potatos. Put salt fish in with potatos, Fish is done when flakey. When fish is cooked mix with brewis and serve.
Wash Peas. Put in pot, add salt beef. Cook for about 1 hour, then add vegatables.
