Roger Taylor
Roger Meddows Taylor was born at the West Norfolk and King's Lynn Hospital in King's Lynn,
Norfolk, on Tuesday, July 26, 1949. He was born to Winifred and Michael Taylor, an inspector
for the Potato Marketing Board.
- He attended his first school, Gaywood Primary for three years, when the
family, including sister, Clare, moved to Truro in Cornwall.
- He then enrolled at Bosvigo School
- In 1957, at age 8, Roger formed his first band, The Bubblingover Boys.
- In May 1960, he started Truro Cathedral School, where he was awarded a choral
scholarship, leaving his band behind.
- For Christmas 1961, Roger got a bass drum and tom-tom.
- In 1963, he formed The Cousin Jacks, which lasted twelve months.
- In 1965, Roger joined a local band called Johnny Quale and The Reaction
- On March 15, they entered the Rock And Rhythm Championship and won fourth place.
- In September 1965, Johnny left the band, and they became Reaction
- On March 7, 1966, the band entered the same contest and won.
- In the summer of 1967, Roger left Truro School with seven "O" levels and
three "A" levels.
- In October 1967, he began a degree course at London Hospital Medical School.
- During the summer of 1968, Roger went back and played more Reaction gigs.
- In the autumn, after Roger left back for school in London, the band fell apart.
- Roger was still intent on being in a band, so he answered an ad asking for
"a Ginger Baker/Mitch Mitchell type drummer".
- He soon became a member of Smile.
- After Tim Staffell decided to go solo, Roger, along with Brian May and
Freddie Mercury, Staffell's flat mate, formed Queen.
