-- I am an absolute movie buff and I've decided to review the latest films that I have seen in the theatre. --

| With a lack of great movies to go see, EDtv was selected by default. The concept was good and the cast was pretty solid as well. But, even though it is quite a bit different than Jim Carrey's Truman Show, the 'filming a guy's life' concept in that movie still kinda stole some of Ed's thunder. Anyway, the film was rather funny, original and believable. However, I do think a heavyweight actor should have been casted as Ed (someone more prominant than Matthew McConaughey) since his family in the film were all Academy Award nominated and winning actors. But, all and all, this was an entertaining film and probably would have been more sucessful had Truman not preceeded it. | |||
| While I didn't really have high aspirations for this movie, it actually gave me a lot more than I expected. Sarah Michelle Gellar sizzles in her quite sexy role while co-star Reese Witherspoon also does her fair share of causing heads to turn as well. The most surprising aspect of this movie is that while it was absolutely laced with sexual overtones, there isn't one ounce of true nudity. The other great aspect about the movie was its ability to make you laugh as well as keeping you guessing until the end. There is no doubt that this movie scores big on the visual end of things (Sarah, Reese, etc.) but its content is just as worthwhile. I thought it was a thoroughly entertaining film. | |||
| This movie works because of the talent of Robert DeNiro. Here's a guy who is a highly reguarded, serious actor and he turns in a very funny, comedic performance in this film. It's like he took a bit of Andrew Dice Clay's attitude & manner and incorporated it into his character. Anyhow, DeNiro plays a emotionally distraught mafia leader who requires/forces Billy Crystal, a psychiatrist, to help him. Crystal's life basically turns upside down because of his new patient. All & all, the movie is a lot of laughs. And being a HUGE fan of Robert DeNiro, I would say of all the movies that I have seen him in, this was one of his top five best performances in my book. It isn't easy to do comedy especially for an actor like him. This movie was well casted overall and the supporting actors were worth quite a few laughs themselves, as well. | |||
| This movie is an absolute riot! I didn't have extremely high expectations going into this one & it turned out to be even more than just a pleasent surprise. In today's society, so many people dislike their jobs and will be able to relate to this film. The premise of this movie was based on a mediocre, animated skit from Saturday Night Live entitled "Milton". The character Milton is hardly the primary focus here but still has a significant role in the story. While the main actors are not big stars, the whole cast was well selected. Jennifer Aniston was the only major name in the film and she was just an added bonus to an already original and funny movie. Since this film is quickly falling down the "Top Movies Of The Week" charts, I highly recommend this as a must-rent film when it comes to video!! | |||
| Well, over the past few weeks there has been a lack of interesting films hitting the theatres so "Rushmore" became an obvious choice upon its release this weekend. Many highly credible publications are raving about this film and while I did find it to be entertaining, I'm not giving it the "Best Comedy Of 1998" billing like others have. It is an off-beat comedy and all of the relationships between the characters are anything but normal. Even the ending throws you for a loop. My last words before the final credits began to roll were, "I hope they aren't going to end it like that..." They did. Maybe, because I am not a Hollywood critic, it was a bit over my head. I say, take what you can from this movie and enjoy it. It's a little screwy but it will keep you entertained throughout even if you don't exactly get it. | |||
| I really wasn't sure if I was going to like this movie or not going into it. I must admit, the previews and my like of the show Dawson's Creek (which the star James Van der Beek plays on) was enough to get my butt in the seat. And I'm happy it did. This is a very cool movie with some suprisingly good performances by Van der Beek and Jon Voight who plays the bad-guy, head coach. The conclusion to the film is a little unrealistic but something that you ultimately are very happy with. The football action is totally cool and you tend to get caught up in the action and forget you are watching a movie. There is also a good dose of humor to go along with the hard hits but the underlying, dramatic story to this was pretty intriguing as well. This was a very plesent surprise, indeed! | |||
| If you like John Travolta, you will like this movie. His perfromance in this film is outstanding. Ever since I saw him in that movie with the talking dogs ("Look Who's Talking Now"), he won me over. Travolta plays a cocky, injury claims lawyer who is faced with a decision to take on a potentially expensive case that he initially feels he has very little to gain from. As time goes on, he becomes emotionally caught up in it and is willing to sacrifice everything to win and have justice served. My only objection to the film is that since it is a true story, the movie doesn't have the Hollywood ending you might expect. If this wasn't a true story, I think a different ending would have made this film that much better. Had the director worked some talking dogs into the story, I could have overlooked it :) | |||
| First off, anyone who has the impression that this is a "comedy" is making the wrong judgement. While it certainly has its funny moments, it does a good job in trying to coax tears from your eyes by the end. But no mistakes about it, the first half of the movie is full of laughs and fun, courtesy of Robin Williams. Williams plays a medical student who uses laughter as a form of medicine to help patients deal with their horrible circumstances. Unfortunately, it is not an accepted method of treatment by his peers which causes Patch to find ways to continue his practices while trying to avoid being kicked out of medical school. William's supporting cast were very good and noteworthy as well. This was certainly an entertaining, and even inspiring, movie. | |||
| I don't necessarily go out of my way to see romantic comedies but this plot was just irresistable to me. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan had great chemistry (again) and are both very good. To be honest though, for the first third or half of the movie, I wasn't really caught up in it. But, as it progressed, the story began to pull me in. By the end, I was like a fish with a hook in my mouth; they reeled me in and I couldn't wait to see how Tom and Meg would find their way to each other. The scenario was kinda silly with them just happening to be rival business owners, but the online love vs. their personal dislike story-driving-plot was very rousing. I guess, my lack of interest during the beginning hurts my overall rating a bit but it finished strong and I thought it was an enjoyable film | |||
| Yes, another movie about animated bugs. I enjoyed this movie a little more just because I went to the attraction at Disney World's Animal Kingdom over the summer. Anyway, it was kinda cute and pretty entertaining but if you pressed me on what bug movie was better, I'd choose "Antz". I guess I liked the way the ants resembled the actor who did their voice in that one. The story was a little better in that too. However, this wasn't bad, but I think the fact that it came out second (after "Antz) kinda hurt the appeal. Almost everyone in the theatre stayed after to see who was who, voice-wise, in the credits. The circus bugs were definately the highlight of the movie! | |||
| I guess this would be clasified as a sick, twisted, dark "comedy". Don't be fooled by any review that says this movie is "funnier than There's Something About Mary". No way! This was a pretty morbid, disturbing film where they sometimes tried to make a laughable experience out of a gory murder. But the problem was that some of these murders were shooting for a laugh and others were trying to make you squirm. I don't like having to guess which death is funny. But, as whacked as it was, it did have some humor in it and it was belly laugh funny at times. It was a little Pulp Fiction-like with the way the story starts out and comes full circle. I really disliked the ending to this film. But, there was enough to this movie (good cast, humor, and making you think about what you might do if you were in their situation) that saves it from being a disaster. | |||
| First off, Will Smith and Gene Hackman are just great in this film! This was a really good, action-type flick. It makes you really think about how powerful the government is, and really can be, when it wants to. Will Smith is on the wrong end of a situation he had nothing to do with and the government is out to do anything in its power to ruin his life (and possibly even terminate it) in order to get what they want. He is on the defense until he meets up with Hackman and together they fight back in almost an un-winable battle (especially when the only evidence they have against the government becomes damaged and unusable). While I won't give away the end, Smith does take advantage of a "misunderstanding" between the two parties who both want him dead. A great end indeed. This movie is both thought provoking and great entertainment! | |||
You Did Last Summer | To me, Jennifer Love Hewitt is worth at least a full star by herself! This movie fell a little short of the original but not by too much. This movie still features the hook armed fisherman slasher from the first film but this time, he gets some help. By who? You always find that shocker out in the end. They are able to wipe out the entire island except for our heros (and then some of them don't make it). And just like the original, it ends with another silly conclusion that just screams "sequal". As long as they retain Jennifer Love for it, I'll probably be there. | ||
| Well, what can be said about this one? I went to see it because I haven't seen it for a while and it was a great opportunity to see it the way it was intended to be seen: without commercials! Plus, when I was little, I never watched it like a normal movie. I just wanted to see the funny looking characters while paying little attention to the dialog. I really got to experience this classic (while reliving my childhood) on a different level. Some of the scenes and comedy that worked in the 1930's just comes off as corny in the 90's. I, along with other people in the theatre, were laughing at (not with) the sincerity of Dorathy's tramatic life and times in Kansas & Oz. But, don't get me wrong, this movie is still great. My conclusion is simply this: Hollywood doesn't make enough movies with flying monkeys. | |||
| This one was definately right up Adam Sandler's alley. While it is strange, goofy and weird, it's all done in a very funny way. He starts off as a dumb guy who is the water boy for college football team who turns things around to become a dumb guy who is a star football player and gets the gir l of his dreams. Some luck! Anyhow, it's probably as absent-minded as you would expect but just as funny too. I particularly liked his unique house pet; a full grown mule named Steve who drinks out of the toilet. You can't beat comedy like that! | |||
| If this movie was released in say May, I doubt I would have attended this one. But, come the spookiest time of the year, we all need to sit down and enjoy some blood & gore. The first strike against this movie was that James Woods was the lead actor and the only recognizable one in this film. I'm certainly not his biggest fan but since the vampires are the real stars, this movie can get away with it. From start to finish it was cor ney but fairly entertaining. Nothing spectacular but it wasn't horrible. Since Halloween is now over, I probably would recommend skipping this one and maybe renting it for next Halloween. | |||
| For this film, I especially was intrigued the plot. While it was sorta corny to have a brother & sister from the 90's just zap into a 50's TV sitcom, it was no cornier an idea than what most of those 50's shows were actually based on! Once the "zapping" occured, the movie was a mixture of humor (mostly blatent displays of the 50's & 90's lifestyle contradictions) and drama. Actually, this movie turns out to be very deep and even uses a storyline that parallels past racism in America (having the "in color" people being discriminated by the B&W people in the town). It was a great concept with solid acting & casting. My only gripe was that the endin g wasn't as heartwarming as it was twisted. None-the-less, a quality flick indeed! | |||
| Despite my initial hesitation to see this movie, I still felt compelled enough by the mega-star character cast and it's fascinating animation to still see it. I'm happy I gave in. Certainly, a lot of the fun was waiting to see which star was which bug! Being such a giant fan of Christopher Walken and Sylvester Stallone, I was extremely happy to see them both have "roles" in this film. It's not a movie just for kids and I think anyone could enjoy this one. Just try to avoid theatres w/ little whining & crying kids who ruin your whole movie-going experience (unfortunately, I didn't get that luxury!). | |||
| This one is pretty decent if you need a fright fix. The killer isn't very interesting looking (like Scream) but it is the way the slasher does his (or her) killing is the intrigue here. Every death was done to match the tall-tale death stories that have been passed on for generations. While it took the basic ideas of "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer", it lacked the star power & originality of its contemporaries. But, all and all, it was still entertaining (and thrilling enough) to keep you guessing till the end! | |||
| I really wasn't keen on this one going into the theatre but after I came out, it was a whole different story! Chris Tucker is one funny guy and Jackie Chan was entertaining as well. I had never even seen a movie of Chan's until this (since I really don't care for martial arts films) but this was really a great formula. A very good mix of laughs and action. Don't miss this one! | |||
| I like the actors, the SNL skit and I think the movie had a chance at being pretty good. It turned out nothing better than ok. Certainly, nothing more than that. Basically, this is along the lines of Bill & Ted and Dumb and Dumber but not as original or funny. Sure, these guys made you laugh a few times but most of the laughers were already shown in the commercials. I'd probably say wait till video on this one. | |||
| It didn't live up to the billing of "better than all the summer action films combined" but it was good. Robert DeNiro (my favorite actor) was solid but he wasn't exactly in a role where he needed to intensely "act" or anything. It was a pretty entertaining flick but a few minor confusions and a bothersom conclusion to the film makes it earn three stars in my book. | |||
| I didn't know much about the premise of the movie going in. Jim Carrey makes a special apprearance and narriates this funny and touching movie. The story is simple and centers around two 12 year old boys, with one being a dwarf (Simon Birch). The movie is about how he managed to touch the lives of other people in some way. The boy who plays Simon is very good and as quick as the movie can make you laugh, it can also bring you to an emotional sniffle. This is a quality movie not to be missed. | |||
| I guess this movie fell short in Hollywood's eyes but I don't understand why. The acting was solid with standout, funnyman Mike Meyers, performing excellent in his first dramatic role. It was a nice insight on this legendary club and what went on. It was actually quite fascinating. Joe Nobody could be schmoozing with top celebraties, or even royalty, if he just had the right look going for him. My only gripe was that I was unimpressed with the lead character and/or the actor who played him. He seemed like he was just there so the other actors could bounce off him and play their part. This guy aside, the movie is still worth checking out. | |||
| "Slums" is a twisted comedy and was pretty amusing as well. The family that the story is based around is totally disfuntional (at least as much as "Married With Children's" Bundy family) and the only reason they move to Beverly Hills is because of the father's desire for a great school system for his kids. The problem is that they are poor and can't really afford to live there. Sometimes their disfunction can be such that you are not sure to laugh or feel sorry for them. The movies' lack of good promotion killed its chances for doing well in the theater. It was definately off-beat, but enjoyable. | |||
| All and all, this movie was bad. And this coming from a fan of Mr. Van Damme! The acting was very bad. Not just Van Damme, but everyone in the entire movie delivered their lines rather poorly. I guess it was just a case o f dreadful directing. The story was pretty dumb too. I could not buy the fact that funnyman, Rob Schneider (who really wasn't very funny in this case), could kick any ass what-so-ever. The only reason this movie gets a star is because I can't help being entertained by Jean-Claude kicking some bad-guy butt. | |||
| This was a pretty entertaining movie. Wesley Snipes was very good in this role. Blade, the character, was cold, cool and one tough s.o.b. There was also no shortage of blood since the plot revolves around vampires (even Blade is half Vampire himself). I can't really put my finger on what the movie does lack (besides any other real stars besides Snipes). Maybe the abse nse of a cartoon-like arch-enemy (like Batman and the Joker, etc.) to fight in the end since "Blade" is a Marvel Comic's "superhero". All and all, this was a solid film and I'd recommend it for an action movie. | |||
| This movie was generally funny. The good thing was that with all the previews shown on TV, there still were enough funny parts that weren't ruined. The one deception is that Chuck (the really high-strung, dumb guy who they want as their suicidal roomate) is only one of three wacky roomates they end up trying out. Although he isn't featured as much as expected, it's probably for the better since constant exposure to Chuck would have gotten on your last nerve by the end anyway. If your stuck to see a movie, I'd recommend it for a laugh. | |||
| This movie serves its purpuse. If you need a quick horror fix, you can find it here. It's not Scream but not many are. I have not really followed the series but it really doesn't matter anyway. They fimiliarize you with all important points of past Halloweens so you aren't totally lost. The best part of this movie is that there won't be any sequals (meant in a good way). There really is a perminant resolution to this long running series. | |||
| This was an odd movie to say the least. But, it was entertaining and it's all I ask for in a film. It was like a big budget b-movie but in a good way. It really wasn't a "horror" movie but it had some of the elements of one. It's really more of a thriller. All and all, a decent movie. And one thing's for sure, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) has made herself a new fan! | |||
| I am not a big fan of war-type films so I wasn't touched by this one. It is obviously done well....for a war movie. Maybe it's just not for me. It was well acted and it was very realistic. Actually, it was frightningly realistic. It really did evoke a new found sympathy towards all those who have fought for our country (past and present). But, none-the-less, I don't like being depressed for three hours; maybe others do. | |||
| I loved this movie. Both Jackson and Spacey were fabulous in this film. These two are just so consistantly good in everything they do. In the film, you never are sure who can be trusted and given that, you are kept on edge of your seat even up until the very end. A great story and extremely well acted! I highly recommend this movie!!! | |||
| This movie is an absolute riot! I was almost brought to tears with laughter at some points. It is a bit raunchy but it really isn't very offending because it is all done in good fun. The love story is cute and you root for Ben Stiller all the way. Did I mention Cameron Diaz is hot? I guess that goes without saying. A great flick and unbelievably funny! | |||
| I thought this movie was really cool! Very innovative and original. Don't be fooled by the plastic toy actors in the movie and believing it's a flick for just kids. Actually, if I had younger kids, I don't know if I would take them to this. It's pretty violent. The film really mixes humor, action and animation beautifully. If anything, it is really a treat to look at. I liked this one a lot! | |||
