Ozzy Osbourne / Ozzfest

Dates:
Camden, NJ. - July 11, 1998

Ozzy Osbourne took his festival of metal on the road and I got a chance to catch up with it in Camden, NJ (most consider it "Philadelphia" since it is right across the river). I've attended the last three Ozzfests and this was my least favorite.

With Ozzy Osbourne, you really can't go wrong. If you never seen him before, you will be entertained. He plays all the songs you'd want to hear: "Crazy Train", "Flying High", "Paranoid", "War Pigs", and "Goodbye To Romance" just to name a few. Unfortunately, he plays the same batch of songs every year! Not many changes can be found in his setlist and that is the most disappointing aspect of his performance. He continues to perform throwaway songs like "I Don't Want To Change The World" and "Desire" from the No More Tears CD. Anything from the Ultimate Sin album (specifically "Shot In The Dark") or the No Rest For The Wicked album would have been nice. He really dwells on the first album, Blizzard Of Ozz, the No More Tears album and old Black Sabbath stuff. This takes up 90% of the entire set. The highlights of the setlist were "Mr. Crowley" and "Mama, I'm Coming Home". The only new addition of the set was "Believer".

Over the last few years, Ozzy has found an obsession with......water! Every Ozzfest, Ozzy has this water gun that is hooked up to a hose and just soaks people in the front rows. He also has buckets of water in which he drenches the crowd with as well. This year, he took it even further. The lighting rigg above the stage shot steams of water on the first 20 rows that seemed to saturate every single body in sight! Ozzy is nuts!!!

He opened the show, as he does every year, with a new version of Ozzy TV. In other years, he has gone back in time to perform with Elvis in Las Vegas, the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, and even met those animated, teenage morons, Beavis & Butthead. This year, Ozzy found his was into Titanic in which Leonardo painted him naked. He also became the 6th Spice Girl in their "2 Become 1" video and "MMM Bopped" around with the Hansons. Ozzy had his hair just like them! Lastly, he was one of the naked guys is The Full Monty in which he danced on stage with them and stripped. EEK! None-the-less, it was very funny.

Even though Ozzy was ok, the rest of the Ozzfest was rather dull. Some of the other bands in attendance were Megadeth (who was ok), Coal Chamber (who was fairly good), Limp Biscuit (who sucked), and Tool (who REALLY sucked). Tool was so bad that people became began to crowd surf and mosh just to entertain themselves. And this was during the slow stuff! At one point, more people were facing the lawn section than the stage to see if these two women on some guys' shoulders would take off their tops. The girls ended up putting on a better performance than Tool! There also was a second stage in which groups of lesser popularity performed. They were on the side of the venue so I never got a chance to see anyone on the second stage. Motorhead and Life Of Agony were two of the bands that graced that stage.

All and all, the show was long and boring. I waited 8 hours and endured several bad bands just to see Ozzy play the same material yet again. The only reason that I gave this show two stars is all because of Mr. Osbourne himself. He's pretty entertaining even if he does play the same old stuff. No band from the rest of the Ozzfest deserved even a half of a star for the effort.
