MARILYN’s Letter

HOTLINE from New York!

Hi!

I hope you won’t mind too much me not writing this myself this time, but things are happening so quickly here, that I’m dictating this over the phone from my New York hotel. Valerie and I felt that this way you would get the latest news as quickly as possible.

I’ve decided that for the time being, it would be better for my career if I stay here in New York. In a few days from now I’ll be moving into my new apartment; my London flat has been burgled since I’ve been away, but the possessions I care most about I’d brought here with me.

I’ve been in New York for about four weeks now. A lot of the time I’ve been having the greatest time going to parties, discos and night-clubs, but the rest of the time I’ve been working very hard with George.

It’s taken me a long time to have a working relationship with George, as opposed to a friendship relationship, but now that I have, I’m very satisfied.

We’ve done two great songs – one’s called SPIRIT IN THE SKY, and the other’s called PLAYING WITH MY SEXUALITY. We took them in to CBS yesterday, and the guy that we took the tapes in to – usually if you get a tapping finger you’re lucky – was dancing round the office, so something’s different. Everyone keeps saying that I’m phrasing differently and singing differently, so I think my voice has improved a lot.

Now we’re just waiting to see whether it’s CBS or Warner Brothers that gets the record deal, so it’s looking really good for me at the moment. In the UK we’ll probably be putting the single out either on an independent label, or else signing another record deal, but whatever we do, "I ain’t been licked!"

As soon as I’m wanted in England I’ll be back. Thanks for all your love and support – "reach out, I’ll be there".

Love & kisses

MARILYN

"DESPITE STRAIGHT LINES" RELEASED!

Valerie’s Letter

Hello,

As some of you may know, I’ve now taken over the running of the fanclub from Robert, so it’s me who’ll be writing these letters to you from now on.

You’ll have seen from MARILYN’s message to you that things seem to be working out very well for him just now. When I spoke to him on the phone last night (June 28), he sounded very happy and excited about his prospects and plans for the future.

I doubt that many of you will remember, but when it was first released back in 1970, Spirit in the Sky was a number one smash hit, so I’m sure we all hope it will repeat its former success for MAZ. It’s certainly a great song, and of course, MARILYN’s version is something special in its own right.

I’m sure that many of you will be delighted that MAZ and George have finally combined their talents and are working together – I’ve always felt that the two of them together would make a formidable combination. They have lit the blue touch-paper, now we can all stand back and wait to be dazzled by the explosion!

DESPITE STRAIGHT LINES finally came out on June 21 – I know you’ll agree with me that it’s a fabulous debut album. Ever since I first heard it some months ago, I was certain that you’d all love it; MARILYN is only sorry that it’s taken so long to be released.

So it rather looks like a new era is beginning for MARILYN, with a mega record-deal in the pipeline in the States, and I know that all of our prayers and hopes are with him – perhaps now it won’t be long before he receives the world-wide acclaim and recognition we all want for him.

Finally, I thought you might be pleased to know that when I spoke to MAZ, I assured him that his fans all over the world still love, want and need him; although many of us are out of his sight, he’s never out of our minds, and that his UK fans can’t wait to welcome him home.

Best wishes,

Valerie

SECRETS…

Did you know that as a child, MARILYN’s favourite toy was his "Tressy" doll (like Sindy, but her hair grows) which he kept hidden under his bed?

Did you know that as well as Chanel No. 5, MARILYN’s fave perfumes include Opium and Joy, and that his favourite incense is coconut?

Did you know that when asked which three things he would rescue if his flat were on fire, MARILYN replied "The insurance policies!"?

Did you know that in his London flat MARILYN sleeps diagonally across an eight-foot-square bed, beneath a glittering midnight-blue drape?

Did you know that MARILYN uses "666" brand deodorant, which he buys in Germany, and that his favourite cosmetics are made by Chanel – "They make so many unusual colours, they’re worth paying a little extra for".

MAZfax

Q: What would you do if you were badly scarred in an accident?

A: I’d deal with it.

Q: Do you believe in God?

A: I believe in being yourself and functioning smoothly.

Q: What would you be doing now if you had never met Paul Caplin?

A: Being happy!

Q: What is the stupidest thing you’ve ever done?

A: Met Paul Caplin!

Q: What do you think about Donna Summer’s statement that "AIDS is God’s retribution on gay

people"?

A: I think Donna Summer is very narrow-minded, and if she thought a little bit more, she’d have

a lot more compassion for the human race.

From Gee of Sussex:

I wish I were your pillow

I’d help you rest your head

But I’d rather be your duvet

And lie on you in bed!

MAZmail

Dear MAZmail,

How many MARILYN fans listen to Radio One? If you do, you will have noticed a complete refusal by the DJs to play BABY U LEFT ME. I haven’t heard it played once, while others are played again and again. So I wrote to Radio One complaining about this.

They replied that they never "plug" records, and that their choice of which to play is made purely on "merit", as judged by the individual producers.

I think it’s an insult to MARILYN and his fans. How about you writing to Radio One too, after all, how can the public decide whether to buy it if the station with the biggest audience doesn’t give it any airplay?

SU PHAIR, Twickenham

Radio One told us they weren’t playing it because it was "too new"!

Our local Commercial station was much more flexible, though they seemed to resent our suggestion that they were missing out on a good record – they thing they know best what their listeners want; we think someone isn’t giving out hero a fair chance!

Obviously, the more we all write to all the stations, the more clear it will become to them that MARILYN does have an enthusiastic following who want to hear his music, so let’s all get writing!

Dear MARILYN & Co,

I’d just like to say that although I waited several months to join your Fan Club, it was well worth waiting for.

Since Christmas I’ve received two Newsletters and they’re just great. I didn’t imagine they’d be anything like they are.

I know someone who’s a member of another Fan Club and it isn’t half as good as yours. The fact that the members can air their views whether good or bad, just shows how confident you all are. It’s just superb – I’m grateful for being a member of the best organised Fan Club.

Thanks,

LESLEY, Derby

Other Fan Clubs? You mean people belong to other Fan Clubs?!!! Actually, flattery will get you everywhere, and "best organised" is how we intend MAZ’s Club will stay.

Dear MAZmail,

Having become a MARILYN devotee only recently, you can imagine the excitement of witnessing my first MAZ interview on today’s "Friday People"! I was MAZmerised! It was well worth the twelve hour vigil in front of the TV with a sawn-off shotgun in case anyone tried to change the channel.

Oh, the wit! The looks! The voice! Who was the guy in the dark glasses? Who cares?!! Even through the chaos I did manage to video it. Now I can watch him every morning in slo-mo!

To Top it all, three of my friends called to say how hunky they thought MAZDA looked (I’ve been telling them just that for months). In a land where "Frankie" strikes faster than Ford’s, that’s quite something. Strange what a short back and sides can do for a man, isn’t it?!

Love,

TINA BATE

We think the mystery man in the shades just might have been George but we were so dazzled by MARILYN that we didn’t really notice! Speaking of dazzling – did you see MAZ on "No. 73"?!

Dear MAZMail,

I was very upset when I first heard that MARILYN had cut his hair short – until I saw him shorn! Not only does he now look even more gorgeous than ever, (those shoulders on "No. 73"!!) he has made everything that went before seem irrelevant. Fantastic!

Thanx for the lovely photos you sent when I rejoined the Fan Club – I never dreamed they would be real photographs, and they’re absolutely beautiful. I shall treasure them always!

Love,

FAY

Ooooh – wit … looks … voice … and now shoulders – where will this all end? Think this is getting too much for us, we’re off for a cold shower. More letters next Ish …

MAZsnax

MARILYN often prepares this tasty snack for himself when eating at home (although personally, we’d sooner nibble on the chef!…)

Give the tuna industry a boost and try it for yourself!

1 large can tuna

1 small can sweetcorn

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

I small onion, finely chopped

Black pepper and mixed herbs to taste

Drain the tuna and flake in a bowl. Add remaining ingredients, plus a little of the corn juice, and mix well.

Serve on toast or crackers, or toast one side of a slice of bread, pile mixture on the other side, top with grated cheese and brown under grill.

(Mmmmm. Sounds yummy, but we’d still rather eat the chef!)
