UNTAMED
YOUTH
EXPOSED!
After 10 years of beating out some of the
best
land-locked surf music this nation has ever
ignored,
The UNTAMED YOUTH seem ready for their legendary
status to take hold. With the release of
their 6 th
long player, "YOUTH RUNS WILD!" on Norton
Records,
Bass player Mace might finally be able to
walk down
the street, being treated as his title demands,
as
KING OF MEN!
So with far too much time on my hands, I
decided to
ask singer Deke Dickerson some of the questions
their
adoring public has longed to hear answers
to. Below
are the results of our E-mailed corespondence.
what exactly does it take to be a suave
sophisticated
international playboy?
A certain twinkle in your eye and $30 sewn
into the lining of your jacket.
davie allan sings backup on your new record
"youth runs wild". how did he handle mace's
status as king of men?
Poor Ol' Davie just didn't "get" Mace at
all. I think he's had enough of
trying to understand the "underground" music
scene by hanging out with the
Phantom Surfers!!!
all your album covers seem very colorful,
like a
box of candy, what's your favorite candy?
Unfortunately I don't like colored candy
(except for M&M's). I only like
things with CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT butter,
god's greatest combination.
Current fave is the new Reese's "Sticks"
and the Peanut Butter Goo Goo
Cluster.
you do alot of songs about beer. up here
in the
northwest we do alot of micro-brewing. I
hear you
don't cotton to that. are you some kind o' savage
or something?
Microbrews have the potential to be something
cool but they wound up being
some kind of sissiefied yuppie expensive
"experience." So we say:
PABST BLUE RIBBON! You can buy a 12 pack
for less than two "microbrews." Just
like Little Caesars pizza, we prefer QUANTITY
over QUALITY...
a few years back you moved to california,
for what
reason I'm not gonna ask, and now you seem
to
do all your touring near or east of the mississippi river
(completely leaving out the great state
of oregon)
is there some kind of master plan
behind this?
Yeah, none of your cruddy clubs would book
us! All THREE times we played
Garageshock we tried to get gigs in Portland
to no avail. So we wound up
doing Garageshock and Bob's Java Jive in
Tacoma Washington which was better
anyway. Now, we go where the cash finds
us--which is usually Bloomington,
Illinois or Charleston, West Virginia!
I'm looking at the tracks that make up
your new disc
"youth runs wild"(plus 2 soon to be released
singles)
and notice a glaring omission,
your cover of the remains "don't look back".
when are you gonna make my lil' fan-boy dreams
come
true and lay that one on wax?
We do love that song but the originals cannot
be topped (I'm talking about
the Remains original and the even better
cover by the Rising Storm on their
"Calm before" album). When an original
cannot be topped, there is no use
recording it, which is why I have never recorded
a Link Wray song either.
At some point we'd like to do a "Live from
Bob's Java Jive" EP or LP (like
the world needs another live Untamed Youth
record after the Live In Las
Vegas disc!), and we may do "Don't Look Back"
on that one. MAYBE....
Looks like I'll have to wait a little while
longer.
Go check out any of The Youth's releases,
there ain't
been a bum cut yet.
