"But I don't wanna go mommy!" the little girl screamed. Her mother grabbed her by the arm and dragged her towards their old station wagon.
"Would you stop whining, Misty? I'm doing this for your own good!" Sara replied exasperated. She continued towards the car but was soon stopped by a little boy. "Alexander move out of the way please."
"Where ya going Mrs. Simmons?" 6-year-old AJ asked curiously, playing with his bouncing ball.
"We're going away for awhile."
"Going away...?" AJ asked once her last statement hit him.
"Yes, we're leaving," Sara replied cold-heartedly.
"But... but... Misty..." AJ stammered as he looked at Misty.
"I'm sorry that you kids had to become so attached, but we have to be going. Let's go Misty." The little 5-year-old girl remained behind wanting to talk her best friend.
"AJ..." Misty began but was soon interrupted.
"Let's GO Misty!" her mom said more irritated than ever.
"But mommy! Can't I say bye to AJ? Please???" Misty asked with her most pathetic puppy dog face. Even then, she knew how to persuade people to get her way.
"Fine! But hurry up. We need to get on the road soon." Sara reached the car and finished putting all their belongings in the trunk and back seat.
"I've gotta go AJ," Misty began again, looking down at the ground with her hands behind her back.
"But why? I want you to stay here!" AJ whined stubbornly. He stopped bouncing his ball and stamped his foot.
"I can't Alex! My mommy's making us move again."
"Misty... you can't go! I don't want you to go."
"I... I don't wanna go either. My mommy's being mean. She won't let me stay here with you," she replied sadly.
"Then stay here. We can go run away to the tree house! She won't find us there. C'mon!" AJ said excitedly as he grabbed Misty's hand and began to run but Misty didn't budge.
"Alex, I'm really leaving. I tried going to the tree house but she found me," she whispered.
"Misty!! Let's GO!" Sara yelled from the open passenger window.
"I have to go," Misty said sadly with tears filling her eyes. She started to walk away, but was stopped by AJ's hand on her arm.
"Misty... wait..." Alex began. She turned around to face him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a chain with a silver ring on it. "Here this is for you..." He put the chain around her neck. Misty looked down and admired her new found gift. "My mommy gave it to me before she left. She said to always rub it whenever I missed her. I want you to have it. I have one too, see?" He took out another chain with the exact ring on it. "I'm going to miss you Misty..."
"I can't take this. This is yours!" she protested, trying to take it off. Alex stopped her.
"You have it. Whenever you miss me, rub it like I do."
"MISTY!" Sara yelled once again.
"I'm coming mommy!" she screamed. "I guess this is bye, AJ." Her eyes began to water and her tears soon fell. AJ, seeing her cry, hugged her tightly. "Bye, Alex," she murmured as she returned the hug. They broke apart. AJ leaned in and gave her a sweet kiss on the cheek. Misty then turned and ran to the open car door. She jumped in. Sara started the car and backed out of the driveway. Misty looked out the window as tears continued to fall. She waved good bye to Alex who now stood alone in the yard. Misty rubbed the silver ring because her heart was aching for AJ.
He waved back, tears streaming down his own face. "Bye, Misty," whispered AJ. He rubbed the silver ring that he now put on himself. He missed Misty already.
