MAX Aug 1998,- Interview with Jon
How did you guys get together?
Myself, James and Michael were singing together. I've known them for about eight years. We met Nick about a year ago and played together in a band at school. Then we started to write our own songs and sent tapes to record companies.
Have you done much touring as Ultra?
Two tours, supporting Boyzone and 911. Our first gig with Boyzone was in front of 15,000 people. It was quite exciting.
What was your most embarrassing stage moment?
James fell off the stage. He was wearing sunglasses and trying to be real cool and he sort of walked in front and fell straight off! He didn't really hurt himself. I think he was really embarrassed because everybody was laughing at him.
Can you tell us a bit more about how your songs came to be?
"Whatever" was written in a day in the studio. "Evolution" was a song that we've actually had for quite a while. I remember being in Michael's house and James came in and said " I've written a song , listen to it, it could be quite good." And he played us "Say You Do" and me and Michael looked at each other and said "Wow, that's good."
What kind of girls do you like?
We like girls with sense of humour, have a nice smile. Intelligent. Very good-looking as well!! HaHa!!
What don't you like about girls?
They can be very moody. Difficult to work out. And they take so long to get ready.
That's because they need to look good.
That's what they say!!!
What's the greatest mystery about women?
Why they like us, I guess. You never know why somebody likes you. There's always that element of mystery about it.
Who's what Ultra?
Nick will be Ultra Funny, he's the joker in the band. Michael will be Ultra Cool. He's fashion-conscious and dresses to impress. I'm Ultra Quiet or Ultra Sensitive. And James. Ultra Vain. He's always looking at himself. Whenever we pass a shop, he'd look in the window and do his hair. I shouldn't have said that. I'll be in trouble.
The album?
The album's finished and I think it is gonna be released in England in August. I think it's gonna be called -----Ultra!!! Haha!! What an inventive name!
