DJ Dodgie's Essential New Tunes (Last Updated 13th April 1998)

13th April 1998

Jean Michel Jarre - Odyssey Through O2 - Epic

Jean Michel Jarre is back with an eagerly awaited follow up to his epic album Oxygene. The mixes are great, a very very downtempo and 'hippie' A-side is complemented by some more up beat mixes on the AA. Jarre still maintains the electronica style that he was so famous for in the 80's, and manages to pull this one off without it sounding too dated or cheesey. The promo is out now, with the main release through Epic on the 11th May.

Best Mix: Oxygene 8 - Transmix

Divine Comedy - I've Been To A Marvellous Party - EMI

Those indie-kings are back again this time with a resoundingly more up-tempo dance track, the double promo features mixes from the Trouser Enthusiasts, South Park, Floorgazm and Pink Noise. The vocal is strangely similar to the Underworld-mumbling-in-a-monotonous-style but it complements the track well. I highly recommend this track, for those who can't get the promo, it's out on 30th March.

Best Mix: Trouser Enthusiasts Formaldehyde Spritzer Mix

SYLK 130 - Last Night a DJ Saved My Life - S2

The S-Men are back in the mix with this club-monster from the past. This is one of my favourite tracks this week. Typical Sanchez with a good hard b-line with the vocal floating over the top perfectly. Very well produced track with good structure etc. which is what we can expect from the S-Men. Promo out now, proper release date soon!

Best Mix: Last Night The S-Man Saved The Mix

The Fog - Been A Long Time - Pukka

Pukka's first release release this year brings us a slamming hard-house/garage style track with mixes by Full Intention, Y-Tribe and Discocaine. I am really into this style, the original mix consists of a long looping thumpy bass with the vocal winding over the top. Very DJ friendly, but watch the varying pitch on the intro! Promo out now, official 4th May.

Best Mix: Original Mix

Serious Danger - High Noon - Fresh

Hot on the heels of the massive club hit 'Deeper', the masters of the B-Line are back again with a new speed-garage track which, believe me, is going to be MASSIVE. It has been hammered by the likes of Kiss and Radio 1, I only wish I got this earlier. The promo is out now (I got it late due to the postal strike in my parts of the woods) and it is released properly on 13th April.

Best Mix: Part 1

O.R.G.A.N.- To The World - Multiply

OK, this is my fave tune this week by far. A marvelously chunky beat swamped with true hard house style riffs make this a floor-filler. Tony De Vit on the remix, adds his NRG 'Trade' style giving a different perspective. This one is out now on promo but you'll have to wait until 20th April before you can get it in the shops.

Best Mix: Lifting Club Experience

The Tamperer - Feel It - Pepper

That old Jackson Five tune dragged out and brought up to date with 'Maya' giving it loads on the vocal front providing a catchy, sing-a-long tune. This one is very very DJ friendly and mixes into ANYTHING! The beat drags on and builds up to one of the best breaks I've heard in a while, that is when the old Jackson Five tune comes in... A very nice tune, I highly recommend getting hold of this one (out now on promo, officially 13th April).

Best Mix: Original

Aretha Franklin - A Rose Is Still A Rose US Mixes - Arista

OK, so not the sort of thing you expect to see in my box, and to tell the truth when I got this I though, UH-OH! But give it a chance and it really gets going. This double pack promo features remixes from Love II Infinity, Hex Hector and Johnny Vicious. The only quibble I have with this promo is that the two 12's are just plain white labels, making it impossible to know which mix you are actually playing, looks like I'll have to get the old marker pen out...

Best Mix: I don't know who it is by but it the on the B-side of the second slate. If anyone can help me on this one then please enlighten me...

Discotecs - Playmate Puzzle - FFRR/Heat

How can I describe this tune, it's disco, it's got an acid line in it, it's house, it's funky and chunky (how I like 'em) so take my word for it, it's good. On an extremely limited mailout from FFRR I was lucky to get hold of this, for you lot who didn't get a copy then it'll be on the shelves as we speak.

Best Mix: Dillon & Dickins Allstar Mix

Phunky Phantom - Get Up, Stand Up - Distinctive

Get Up, Stand Up, Strut Your Funky Stuff! And all that... It's that tune that everyone's heard but no-one seems to know where to get it from, well here it is, finally out this week (released officially 4th May for those of you who can't get the promo) With remixes from Tony De Vit, Super Ego, Tin Tin Out and KLM this tune is going to be massive.

Best Mix: KLM Remix

Goldie - Believe - FFRR

When I saw this in my new pile this week, one look at the Metalheadz logo made me think that this would be a class production from Goldie. However I was kinda disappointed, being a big fan of Goldie, it just seems that this is totally different for him, from Digital and Temper Temper, this seems more like garage than drum & bass. However, this still doesn't change my mind, in itself it is an excellent track.

Best Mix: Groove Cronicles Vocal Mix

BBE - Deeper Love - Positiva

Released officially on 4th May, also out this week on promo is BBE's latest offering. I don't know about this one, I think BBE has that 'heard one, heard them all' style which sort of bores me. OK it's good and if it wasn't by BBE it would be really good, but we have come to expect this from them, it all seems to sound like 'Seven Days and One Week' and this is hammered home by the re-cycling of samples.

Best Mix: Extended Mix
