[[The View - July 17, 1998]]

The View: Brian, you had a little bit of heart trouble in the past year since we've seen you, and you actually put off the surgery because you wanted to be with the band. Your mom and dad did not like that at all.

Brian: Not at all.

The View: Well, everyone wants to know that you're healthy and happy.

Brian: Well, I am here for you guys today, healthy and happy as can be. I do want to thank my family at home for all their support, and I do want to thank all the fans for all their love and their prayers...and it's only by the grace of God that I am here today.

The View: We did a little scar comparison upstairs. Its a very cute scar...you saw it already.

Brian: I don't want to look down there! (laugh)

The View: I want to ask AJ something...You had an embarrassing thing happen on a date...want to tell us about it?

AJ: I went on a date with a girl back in Orlando, and we ordered a bottle of champagne, and when I went to pop the cork, it hit her right [on the forehead]! I had never done it before, and it hit her right there.

The View: Did you take her to the hospital, at least?

The View: Did you sip the champagne first, or did you go to her?

AJ: I went to her because, well, she was laughing, but I was nervous that I might have screwed up the entire date. She took it as a joke, luckily, so the rest of the evening went pretty good.

The View: Did you have another date with her?

AJ: Uh, no.

The View: Well, I am impressed, and we talked about this, the four of us, about what nice guys you are. You really deserve all the attention that you get. How come you aren't bad yet, with all the fame and fortune you have? How do you stay being good guys?

Howie: Well, we just have great families, lots of support behind us. We keep each other in check, actually.

The View: Keep each other grounded?

Nick: I'm trying to be bad, but nobody will let me.

The View: Before we get to the audience questions, I know one thing that these girls would like to know: What is your idea of the most romantic date?

Nick: Well, I have been asked this question a few times before. Personally, I am a big lover of the ocean...I love the ocean a lot. We would do whatever all day, and then at night we would go to the beach, with the full moon out and the waves nice and calm, and a nice sandy beach, and just talk and look up at the stars. I live in a really small town right now, and really close to the beach, and I just like the beach and being there.

The View: Are you a fan of co-ed sleepovers?

Nick: Probably not right now.

The View: What about you, Kevin?

Kevin: Uhhh.

The View: No, not co-ed sleepovers! What's a romantic date?

Kevin: I like a nice home-cooked meal. At home! Candles, just chillin' out.

The View: All right let's go outside. There are people waiting a long time to be a part of this.

Audience member 1: Hi guys, I was just wondering that with all the attention you get from fans, with the ones that follow you from place to place, is there ever a moment where you say that you would give it up for just five minutes of privacy?

The View: Oh, Good Question!

Kevin: Sometimes. Thank God that we do have the success that we do, but sometimes, I mean it is just like any job. I mean you get a little tired of your job, and you would like to take a break from things. But then you go out on stage and you see all the fans and their response to your music, and its all worth it. It's all part of it. You have to give up your privacy. You guys know that.

The View: Yeah, but we don't have this kind of crowd, let me tell you!

The View: We have a great story here.

Audience member 2: I waited 19 hours for the upcoming concert to get my daughter tickets, and she is just thrilled to see you guys...She's in remission right now. She had cancer three times and she just wanted to see you guys so bad so we're here!

The View: It was her biggest dream.

Nick: I have a little present for you. Are you ready for it? A signed Backstreet Boys shirt.

Kevin: She's going to come up on stage with us tonight. Because she has the same outfit on as the rest of us she's going to go on the road with us!

The View: Now everybody signed the Backstreet boys t-shirt, which is fabulous, and we all appreciate you coming and being so special with us today....We have another question.

Audience member 3: Hi, I wanted to know if Brian was really engaged?

Brian: Well, I had heard some rumors. One of our managers came up to me, just yesterday, in the dressing room before our show, and asked how she should address the issue of a rumor on the internet that I was engaged. But I am not engaged so I guess that clears it up.

Audience member 4: Now that you are in show business, what's one thing that you would have wished you had known about before hand? And do you have any regrets?

Howie: I guess we all got involved in this. We all thought is was really quick, overnight success. You just run and do the show at night, and then maybe hang out afterwards. Not much actual work to do. We realized in the last five years that the music business is actually a lot more than just singing. You actually have to do a lot of work during the day: the press, the photos, and everything. It's a little bit more than we actually thought it was. Like I said, we thank God everyday that we got the opportunity to do what we do.

Audience member 5: Hi my name is Lisa and I just wanted to know, in your videos, you have these girls who are like really perfect and beautiful, and have perfect bodies and beautiful hair, and in interviews you say that it doesn't matter how a girl looks and what really matters is what's in the heart. I was just wondering, why that is?

The View: She nailed you guys! She nailed you!

Brian: Just as you'll see a little later in the show, we are going to be singing the song called, I'll Never Break Your Heart. I didn't mean to tease the issue, but I think, just like you said, it has to do a lot with the inner self. I know in videos and TV there are a lot of beautiful people. But that's just TV.

The View: A girl doesn't have to be a model to go out with you guys, right?

Kevin: You're absolutely right. I mean, you have to be attracted to that person, but I mean, it's a lot of what you have inside.

Audience member 6: How do all your family members feel about you singing and all the famous work?

Kevin: All of us have been in show business in some sort of way for many years: Started singin' on star search when we were very little - most of us - we have always been in entertainment. They're excited, especially excited because our success is happening in the United States now, and that's great. I want to say hello to all my family back home....Hi Mom!!

The View: A lot of people don't realize that this is your first US tour...You toured in Europe first and now you're doing the US.

Kevin: This is our first major US tour.

Audience member 7: I just want to know who are your favorite idols, and why?

Kevin: Wow...there are so many great artists that we like. We love all types of music.

Howie: Boys 2 Men, New Edition, Coming Back, Group Weiss, Temptations

Kevin: Tempations, Maxwell, Elton John, Billy Joel, Prince, BeeGees

The View: Well, for all these ladies out here, you know that you're their idols, so you're on that list, babies, so there you go. Thank you so much to you guys!
