It all started six years ago...

Darren and Daniel met through an ad that Daniel had put in a Brisbane magazine "Time Off".

Darren at the time was studying at University to become a preschool teacher. "Daniel was in a band that needed a singer. Lots of losers auditioned and I was the last. I sang the audition piece in the wrong key and my voice split, but we clicked immediately".After a bit they two guys broke away from the other band members and worked by themselves. They two spent two years playing in pubs and clubs around Brisbane in a cover band called "Red Edge". In 1994 they decided to go off their own songs, forming Savage Garden. For the few years they wrote music together. Their bedrooms in the Brissy burbs posed for their studio. They weren't quite sure at first just how they were going to make it, but they never once thought they wouldn't. "We sat in a room, sent out 150 demos-tapes and waited for the calls. We didn't think for one second they wouldn't come." said Darren!

The demo got the attetion of several record companies and much support from John Woodruff, their manager. "He didn't have all of the answers at all," Hayes said, "He just had a little faith. He saw as for what we were, which as two kids in a bedroom who'd write some good songs. We weren't a band, we had to become musical."

When their first single "I want you" was released in Australia, it blew everyone away. One Melbourne radio was the first radio that played "I want you". Brisbane was one of the last places to get on board, even though they're from there.Since then Savage Garden've had to sucess! "I want you" was the higgest selling sinlge in Australia in 1996, "To the Moon & Back" was the song of the year in 1997, "Truly Madly Deeply", the higgest selling Australian single in 1997, and peaked at #1 position in the America Billboard Charts."Break Me Shake Me" and "Universe" had a big sucess in Australia, held its own at goos positions on the charts for several weeks. Savage Garden's debut self-title album is platinum status in a lot of countries, and they are the higgest selling Australian album by a group in recording Australian history.

On october 24th 1999 second album "Affirmation" was released in Australia and went to a #1 position in the first week .

Guys planing the tour in year 2000 who will start probably in March in Oz and than in the summer of 2000 they will be touring rest of the world ...

How they got their name:

Their name "Savage Garden" comes from a Anne Rice's novel called "The Vampire Lestat" (who did the book "Interview with the vampire"). Darren loves this book, and he got this name from there. Quote Darren: "Anne talks about the world as a Savage Garden. There are two levels. One is beautiful but in the other, underneath, we're all sabage beasts. We thought that was quite fitting- but we don't want to sound too poncy. It's all just pop music!".- Quote Daniel:"Originally, we had about four names, like "Dante's Inferno" and "Bliss". But every name we chose was already taken- it was really frustranting!".
