based on ideas, designs and handicrafts stimulated by the old traditions in
Norwegian culture and history.
"The 1909 Christmas plate was produced in only ca. 225 ex.
Reintroduced in 1968, the Christmas plate was produced in 10.000 ex." -

"Bing & Gröndahl was established in
1853 but it was not until 1895 that Harald Bing (B&G) introduced
certainly the world's first Christmas plate in the new underglaze technique. How
could he imagine that
this little gift item would one day become a highly valued object for collectors
around the world?.
"The plates tell the story of Denmark and its' people, their
accomplishments, conquests and way of life
full of joy, happiness, sorrow, delight and love. The fact that each Christmas
plate is immediately sold out
shows the vivid interest in these specimens of Danish design and craft, and
through a world-wide net of
distributors devoted collectors are looking forward every year to recieving the
annual addition to their
much cherished collection. Very few people however, can pride themselves of a
complete collection.

acquire but also the new ones
very soon become highly cherished rarities, because the number of produced
Christmas plates
is always controlled and limited, and the moulds are destroyed." -

"The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain
Manufactory, the oldest existing factory of industrial art in Denmark,
was established in 1775.
"Since 1903 Royal Copenhagen Xmas plates have featured different religious
motives and typical Danish
winter scenes each year without interruption. They are manufactured by a special
technique where a skilled
craftsman carves the picture in plaster mould interpreting the artist's design.
This hand-carved mould is the master
for subsequent moulds. Each plate is then decorated by painters with the blue
underglaze colour after which each plate
is glazed and fired thus for ever preserving the motive under the glaze.

have become collector's items
