The first thing that people ask is ............ Will Linux working under DOS ? well...........the answer is Linux doesn't even need DOS to run !!!!!!  Linux is just like DOS. It is an operating system that power up your computer....like Windows NT and DOS. Linux can even run on computer that cannot handle DOS or Windows. Linux can even run on a car radio and play mp3 !!

Linux is a UNIX clone . What is UNIX ? UNIX is an operating system also. Have you ever watch 'Starship Trooper' 'Star War' 'Indiana Jones' ??  Those movie was made by the SGI workstation that running on UNIX. By the way, do you still remember the IBM computer that beat the world chess champion Kasparov ? That computer was powered by a 64 bit UNIX also.

In the 1980s , The US is having cold war with USSR, so the US Army decide to build a huge computer network to make sure communication still available when the nuclear war happened . They choose UNIX as the network OS. that network grow and grow and becomes the biggest network in the world. That network is call as The Internet today. So UNIX is the internet and the internet is UNIX.

And guess which operating system that made the Titanic and those incredible special effect ? It is  Linux !!!!

Linux look a lot like UNIX. It can run program that was written for other UNIX and it is even better then other UNIX platform. Most of the UNIX command can be able to run on Linux.

Actually Linux is just the kernel of the Operating System. Other program that you got inside your Linux CD was actually taken from the BSD project and the GNU project.  Some program like Netscape is just freeware.

How Linux was born ?

In 1991, a  University student from Finland called Linus decide to make an OS for fun. The first version was really buggy but he posted it on the internet newsgroup together with the source code.  Since then many programmers, scientist and computer hacker keep on improving it and after 8 years, it is no doubt the best OS today.
