Kirsty MacCollI bought this album after I read about Kirsty MacColl on the internet. I recognized her name; she sings backing vocals on "Ask" by The Smiths and on "Interesting Drug" by Morrissey. Her association with Morrissey and Johnny Marr goes even further than that. Johnny wrote a couple of songs for her, and Morrissey has used Kirsty's guitarists Mark Nevin and Boz Boorer on his albums. In fact, her ex-husband is producer Steve Lillywhite. After reading that, I decided to pick up her greatest hits album, Galore, out of curiosity.

With a few exceptions, Kirsty's songs are pretty good. She has a very nice voice, and her choice of collaborators is very good. The music is nice to listen to. I don't know if she's working on any new material. I might be interested in picking it up if she ever does.

By the way, Kirsty comes from a musical family. Her father, Ewan MacColl wrote the old standard "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (which Alison Moyet has covered).

When I pop this disc in to play, I program the player to skip tracks 3 and 11 (because they sound too country-western) and tracks 5 and 6 (because they're with The Pogues, who I don't really like). After that's taken care of, I really enjoy this album. (Note: Morrissey guitarist Boz Boorer informs me that he, personally, enjoys those tracks.)

My wife swore when she heard "They Don't Know" that it was a remake of a 60s tune. Nope. It's a Kirsty MacColl original from 1979, but later became a hit for Tracey Ullman. It does sound like a 60s song, though. A lot of the tunes have a 60s feel to them. It's an enjoyable album. My favorite track is "Walking Down Madison", which was co-written by Johnny Marr. Yes, that is the Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby". "My Affair" and "Titanic Days" were co-written by Morrissey collaborator Mark Nevin. "Perfect Day" (a duet with Evan Dando) was co-produced by Boz Boorer. I think Morrissey/Smiths fans will appreciate this album if even for those connections!

Kirsty had the album's liner notes written by a few friends, who she thanks for letting her "revel in the glory without the inconvenience of actually dying." The contributers include Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Bono of U2, and David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads.
