After nearly being tossed into public domain, Yellow Submarine will be rereleased on VHS and DVD on September 14th (in Dolby 5:1 Surround). A laserdisc version may follow, however, this remains unconfirmed. The VHS copies will retail at $ 19.98 while the list price for the DVD version will be $ 29.98. With heavy merchandising tie-ins, it's expected that many retailers will use the video as a loss-leader. The DVD will include a behind-the-scenes featurette, The Mod Odyssey; behind-the-scenes photos; a music-only track; interviews; and three storyboard sequences, including two that did not make it into the film. MGM will screen the film in 20 markets and also promote the Video, DVD and CD on VH-1 and through national television and print ads. MGM also plans to develop account-specific sweepstakes and promotions. The new ending credits state: "All songs and audio were edited, remastered and remixed entirely in 24 bit digital specifically for the 6 channel DTS sound system used in theatres and for DVD and laserdiscs...".
As of early July, advance screeners were being mailed to retailers in this well-made custom 12" x 12-1/2" x 1-1/2" thick cardboard box. If you wonder why Beatles videos can take forever to be released, the credits line on the back of the video box may give a clue: 1968,1999 Subafilms Ltd., Distributed by MGM Home Entertainment, Available exclusively through Warner Home Video, Apple Corps.
