Result: MDS Aero 5 Systemhouse Integrators 6
Anybody else feel like they've been eating a big pile of soil this morning?
Ken Steele is traditionally a happy hunting ground for Systemhouse, last night was no exception.
Ken Steel field was more dust than grass and looked as though an early morning mist was floating above it.
However mist doesn't sit so heavily on the lungs.
Game on at 8:35 - still waiting for a couple of players from both teams who were unfortunate witnesses to the fatal road crash that happened just outside the entrance to Ken Steel.
1st Half
Jeremy's received a pass from Wally early in the game and after a fabulous run down the right took a long hopeful shot that somehow beat their goalkeeper on the bounce 1-0, Jeremy's first goal of the season, following on from his two shutouts in goal the previous two games. Done pretty well for us recently has Jeremy.
Midway through the half, a lofted ball from Jeremy lands in the area about 12 yards out, I go for it, as does their keeper and head it (yes I said I headed it - don't have a heart attack Shaun) over him towards the empty net before he poleaxes me. A defender ran back and played volleyball managing to knock it wide.
Penalty to us, the ref just booked the player though it should be an automatic red card and his leniency would lead to some problems later in the game.
I took the penalty and put it low and to the keepers left, though he did make a great effort and touched it before it went in. 2-0.
Shortly after, they took the ball up the other end and scored 2-1. I'd tell you about it but I only remember the sight of the net being hit by a ball.
Shortly before half time Naser dribbled into the area, passing 175 defenders on the way and from the left hand side sent a screamer into the corner. 3-1. A wonderful goal.
Half Time
We'd created a number of chances in the half and should have led by more as some excellent chances went begging. Jon Corchis in particular had some excellent chances but managed to either hit the keeper or just the wrong side of the woodwork.
We were keeping the ball low when shooting and the shots were either being saved or going narrowly wide.
The defence looked solid, and the midfield was creating chances, as were the forwards on the wings.
Mark Weaver had to quit when he re injured his groin and Wally had to leave at half time which weakened our midfield considerably.
2nd half.
Memory getting hazy here, Jeremy scored his second goal of the game 4-1. Can't remember a bloody thing about it. sorry.
I was played in by a great through to the right hand side of the area, took it wide of the keeper who'd come out to narrow the angle expecting a shot and squared it for Jeremy to steer into the empty net from 15 yards out. Unfortunately he didn't hit it quite hard enough and had to half kill himself lunging for the ball on the line before (or rather as) the defender stretched for it. 5-1 - we were cruising. Jeremy was limping, but he'd scored a hat trick.
From where I was, it looked like the MDS player tripped over the ball whilst heading away from the goal on the edge of the area on the RHS - Certainly there didn't seem much danger so we wouldn't have fouled him - would we?. Referee saw it differently though and awarded a penalty. 5-2.
Two minutes later and it's 5-3 as MDS started to push forward, and maybe we lost concentration a little bit. But Tony Lyons in nets had no chance with the shot.
Shortly after that, another penalty for either a trip, or tackle from behind, I'm not totally sure what he gave it for, but two players touched, ref pointed to the spot, they scored and it was 5-4.
Much arguing and complaining ensued amongst our team, blaming ourselves, the referee, the opposition, various gods and deities, but we managed to calm everyone down and not lose our heads completely as MDS were really up for it now.
Naser played a great through ball for me to run on to (beautiful pass), I beat the defender to the ball and shot over the keepers head and into the net. 6-4 with 5 minutes to go.
Still time for some drama, MDS attacked down the right hand side, forward and defender side by side, Tony was surprised when the ball suddenly shot low and hard into his bottom right hand corner. At first I thought it was an own goal but I'm told otherwise. 6-5.
3 minutes to go, could we hang on? Yes. The ref blew for full time as Naser was writhing in pain on the floor, having been kicked from behind for the umpteenth time in the game.
An exciting game, certainly more exciting than it should have been given that we were 5-1 up at one stage.
That result means the lowest we can finish is 4th place, which basically means we’ve had a good season, whatever our final result.
Promotion depends very much on the results of Nortel Bears and MD Management.
If MD Management won last night, the best we can manage is 3rd place, which will still win promotion to division 2.
Final game is next week against Canadian Marconi who are rooted to the bottom of the division.
However, we underestimate them at our peril.
