Last night there was an exhibition of sublime passing, perfect ball control, team understanding and a high degree of skill.
Unfortunately that was taking place at the European Cup Winners Cup Final in Birmingham, England.
At Roland Mitchener field in Kanata, something resembling soccer was taking place but it wasn't pretty.
It was a cold and very windy evening, not conducive to great ball control, coupled to the fact that we’d had no exhibition games so this was our first game together, it was always going to be difficult.
We lost 3-2 to a poor team. We had our chances to equalize in the 2nd half, but didn't trouble their keeper as much as we should have done.
Tracy Powell scored our first goal, a cracker from 25 yards out.
I'm eating humble pie right now. (Last season I told Tracy he'd never score in my lifetime with his 25 yarders). Good goal mate, though slightly wind assisted I think. (More curve than a boomerang)
Our second goal came from the penalty spot. Bruce Williams was caught on the shoulder by a defender who came in with a shoulder charge that may have been legal in Hockey but was well out of order on the football field. I took the penalty and scored.
We had the chance to equalise when we were given a second penalty for handball. I have to say I thought we were fortunate to get it, but we’ll take what we are given.
The ball was changed just before the kick and Jon Corchis hit it high and hard but unfortunately too close to the keeper who managed to tip it over the bar.
