"We had to explain [to the producers] that we had a vision. We
weren't looking for someone to rip [the music]
apart and create something new. [The album] came out the way
we wanted." -Antoine, on creating the Piece of
Paradise album
"We're not songwriters that.....throw things out and find a producer
to put it together. We work out everything
ourselves. We want to be recognized as songwriters and I think
if we have a chance to establish that, we'll
have a long career." -Antoine
"People don't like it when they get to the sixth song on the record
and they say: 'Damn, I've been listening to
the same song six times in a row and the only thing that's different
is the arrangement.' We didn't want to have
that. We wanted to bring people into a different world in every song."
-Antoine
"Our influences are very diverse. We wanted to take the best
elements of all kinds of music and fuse them
together. It's uncharted territory for the music industry to
have a record that's so diverse. But just the fact
that it all comes out of our heads, it somehow holds together." -James
"It was really fun, especially after six years in the living
room. To play with those guys was just ecstasy. It
was totally mind-blowing. It sent shivers down my spine." -Antoine,
on recording songs with Motown guitarist Wah
Wah Watson, and the famed Tower of Power horn section.
"For us even though it was musically pop, we always wanted to offset
that with a different element," -James, on
SKY's unique sound
"When you listen to the lyrics they're not pop at all, they're
completely twisted kind of crazy lyrics," -Antoine,
on SKY's lyrics.
"The whole image thing came surprisingly easy for us. My mom's
a fashion designer in Montreal, so all the
way through my life fashion was always something that
I've enjoyed -- put colours in your life. I've always
loved to dress with cool stuff." -Antoine, on SKY's image.
"For now, everything that's happening on stage is completely natural,
there's nothing prepared......A live show
for us is about live -- it's about the moment. If a dynamic
is there at that moment, that night it will create an
energy. The second you start playing with a [digital audio
tape] or a machine in the back you cut all that
possibility of being spontaneously creative." -Antoine, on performing live.
"Stylistically, we don't craft our songs to fit any kind of niche," -James
"I'd like to work with someone like Celine Dion or Mariah Carey.
Definitely Celine. I can't say I've liked
everything she's done, but she's an artist I have a lot of respect
for. Her voice is an amazing instrument!"
-James
"Yeah, after I got my tongue pierced, I bugged him; I said, 'You
look too clean, I mean, you gotta fuck that
face up a little bit,' and then I said the "B" word--I
said, 'Man, you look too nice, you look like one of the
Backstreet Boys." -Antoine, on convincing James to pierce his chin.
"For the people who do take the time to read the lyrics, we wanted to shock them a little bit," -James
"It's great to hear a nice groove or a fun melody, but if you
want to get any deeper into the record most of the
time you're stopped there because of the lyrics." -Antoine
"We each thought the other was a freak, but that's why we liked
each other: We were the only two freaks in
the class. Everybody else looked like an accountant." -James,
on him and Tony meeting at recording engineering
school.
"You don't have to go back and listen to the whole thing, but
please listen to Powder, Shave and Love Song."
-Antoine, asking critics to reconsider their negative opinions
"They were looking for a pop act, and definitely we are. But we can be a long-term pop act." -James, on signing
