Vince Gill with Bryan White.
April 25/97 Canadian Airlines Saddledome,Calgary Alberta Canada.

A funny thing happened at the Country Concert that evening. We were mesmerized by the virgin voice of Bryan White and the extrodinaire guitar playing of Vince Gill. This 3 1/4 hour concert brought the old in with the new. Bryan's new country look and sound was a great opener for Vince's country roots style. The show opened with Bryan White rolling through hit after hit. Wow,I didn't know this 23 year old had that may hits. His crystal clear voice with his 6 piece band sounded just great. He had the girls eating out of his hand with his boyish looks and his movements on stage.Watch this guy cause he's going to the top. After a short 45 minute set,the arena's lights were turned on and the curtain drawn, much to the displeasure of the crowd who wanted more.
An intermission followed, then the lights dimmed, and Vince Gill was center stage. His tradition carried on with him wearing the hometeams (Calgary Flames) hockey jersey and he already had the crowd on his side. Again,as with Bryan White, Vince's vocals were crystal clear and emotion full and his guitar picking was second to none. Can this man play a guitar. He even had a hand at the mandolin and a fiddle, even though he told us not expect too much as he wasn't very good at the fiddle. Turned out he was quite good. His upbeat song had the joint rocking, but his forte' is the slow, sad songs.Hit after hit he delivered. A exceptional moment came when he sang a line of "I've Been Trying to Get Over You." and choked up.He carried on like a true professional he is and got through it.After the song the crowd gave him a very long standing ovation and he said very sincerly a big thank you and that he appreciated it. What was Bryan's downfall was the lack of rapture he had with the audience. Vince was just the opposite. He told us about his daughter and how he got to writing the new song "Jenny Dreamed of Trains". and he joked about him turning 40 last week. After a much too short set of about 1 1/4 hours, the crowd had him back doing another 45 minutes. We loved it. Well, all good things must come to an end,and at 11 p.m. the stage was empty and the road crew was tearing the stage down for his next concert in Vancouver B.C. two nights later, but our night was not over yet,we had the post party to go to.
Elaine had won tickets to the after concert party through our local radio station, Canada's Country Station of the Year Country 105 in Calgary. The Chrysler Club downstairs in the Saddledome was just packed. We were there for about 10 minutes when Vince Gill AND Bryan White made an appearance.Girls started chanting Bryan,Bryan and then it was Vince,Vince. After Vince had drawn the grand prize of a trip to Vancouver to see his Sunday Night Concert, they were off,but the party continued. We danced, sang and won prizes.Truly a night to remember. Come back anytime Vince and Bryan.
