The Mavericks
September 13/96 Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary Alberta Canada.
( This review is mirrored at SHARON'S MAVERICKS PAGE)

The Mavericks performed on Sept. 13, 96 at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary Alberta, to a capacity crowd. As usual with this tour, Junior Brown opened up the 3 1/2 hour show with his brand of old style arrangements of his songs. The most exciting part of his segment was the ending instrumental montage of classic Venture type songs. It actually was quite good. After a half hour intermission, the main course was ready. With a clap of thunder, and a lightning strike, the Mavericks were center stage with "Here Comes The Rain". The sound in the Jubilee is just great, and every heavy bass, every pounding drum beat is heard with clarity. The guys went through a lot of their CD stuff, with quite a few surprises, such as "Okie From Muskogee", and the sweetest rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" that he did solo. After the first encore, the crowd wouldn't let them leave without another half an hour of good time rock and roll that had (with Raul's coaxing), everyone up front and personal. We all got our money's worth and more out of this concert. Much better than when we saw them open up for Mary Chapin Carpenter. These guys are true musicians and truly professional entertainers. They know what the crowd wants, and deliver. We will be the first ones in line for tickets on the next time around.
