SAVAGE GARDEN: THE TERRIBLE TRUTH

We all know the singer is called Darren Hayes, the other one is called Daniel Jones and they come from Queensland in Australia. But it seems there is a darker side (yikes) to Savage Garden...

DARREN'S ABOUT TO THROW A SHOWBIZ TANTRUM!
"We're decent people," says Darren, " but every now and again we feel like throwing a tantrum. Like, everywhere we go the record company sends us pastries. Why? We don’t ask for them. And there's fruit everywhere - you get a huge basket when you're only in the country for one day. There's even a pineapple in there - I mean, how do you consume a pineapple?!"

DANIEL HAS CLIMBED AYERS ROCK (V. BIG THING IN OZ)!
"I thought it'd be fun, but it was really difficult," shivers Daniel. "You pull yourself up to the first level and there's 28 plaques for people who've died on the way up! You sort of go, 'Hmm... do I really want to go up?' But at the top it’s really amazing. You can see three of the seven states of Australia, which is amazing considering that each one's about as big as the whole of England!"

THEY'RE ALWAYS EMBARRASSING THEMSELVES!
"I get embarrassed when the elevator doors close on me," admits Daniel sheepishly. "You walk in trying to be cool and they go 'bam!" "I was embarrassed when we had to be interviewed by a monkey puppet!" huffs an outraged Darren. "Here! In England! On Mashed!" "But we like monkeys," adds Daniel, a tad bizarrely, "We like their long arms. We were going to write a song about it, actually."

DARREN HAS WATCHED IN BED WITH MADONNA SO MANY TIMES HE CAN MIME ALONG TO IT!
"I absolutely love Madonna and I must have watched that movie a million times," exaggerates Darren. "Growing up, I'd watch it with dear friends of mine and just think, 'I want that lifestyle'. It’s usually the tantrum scene that I mime along to. The make-up artist's doing Madonna's lips and she screams (in American accent) 'Do something else! Do my eyebrows! I don’t care!" (He continues at length) it’s one of my most favorite things."

DANIEL WAS A HERO AT SCHOOL BUT DARREN WAS A NERD!
"I was kind of a peacemaker at school," remembers Daniel. "If I saw a nerd getting picked on, I'd say, 'hang on, man.' I'd use my powers for good, ho ho!"
"I was a nerd," mutters Darren. "I didn’t fit in at all and I didn’t want to. My classmates had no intelligence - they'd smoke and get drunk, and get pregnant and I had no interest in that. Then all the morons left and I got into music lessons and drama. Suddenly, the nerd was kind of cool."

DARREN'S LIKE A SKATEBOARD BOWL (WHATEVER THAT IS)!
"We have a very strong friendship, of course we think very highly of each other," wibbles Darren. "Daniel’s a dear friend to me for many reasons that you might not understand."
"Darren’s like a skateboard bowl," offers Daniel, a tad perplexingly. You go up one side and down the next- it’s really an enjoyable ride. You're just like, 'wooo!’"
