The eight-line untitled poem appeared... under the title "Liberty Forever".... There is no evidence that Hill intended the poem to be sung.
Archie Green, in Gibbs M. Smith, Labor Martyr Joe Hill, New York, NY, 1969, p. 236.

First published in the December 1914 edition of the Industrial Worker "Little Red Songbook."

If Freedom's road seems rough and hard,
And strewn with rocks and thorns,
Then put your wooden shoes on, pard,
And you won't hurt your corns.
To organize and teach, no doubt,
Is very good -- that's true,
But still we can't succeed without
The Good Old Wooden Shoe.
