Many people have this negative idea of what electronic music and the lifestyle associated with it are about. Yes, there is a lifestyle, and it's called PLUR .
Peace, Love, Unity, Respect.
Violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, and any other form of negative energy will not be tolerated. But going to raves, listening to electronic music, those are just forms of expression of one's interests. Being PLUR carries over into everyday life. In everything one does there is harmony, motivation, enthusiasm, and respect. It is true that the rave scene has remained underground for years. In fact, it's been more then a decade. But in a world where hate, crime, and war have been all over the media, is it any wonder? There are no bad vibes at a party. We just want to dance.
There is no right and wrong in dancing. We all feel the groove differently. Our bodies all move differently in reaction to the beat. We're all one form when we dance; we have one commen goal, and that is to have as much fun as possible. Fun is to be taken very seriously, life is to short to worry uneccassarily. So we just dance. Take a night off from life and just have fun. I'm not asking you to become a raver. I'm not asking you to like electronic music. I'm just asking you to behave as a raver does. Go to a party or two. Observe the high energy peacefulness of people who don't want to cause trouble. It's all simply PLUR. So come on. Give peace a chance. Don't talk about it, just do it.
I believe Layne Thomas has another really great explaination of PLUR and rave culture:
"Those wierd techno kids, just what are they up to? Staying up late at night listening to wierd bump-it-ti-bump-it-ti-boom computer music. They go to strange locations, driving long distances, just to. . . what? Glittered up, macked out, high on love kids dancing to techno-shamans, whispering underground messages to those that can understand, generating astral vibrations, evolving the groove towards . . . where?
"Accelerated realities condensed into brief high energy collective consciousness raising. Frequency generated music pushing events and souls towards a zero point of infinite possibilities. Consensual hallucinations creating feedback waves creating consensual realities lighting the fuse for a massive implosion of energy . . . when? Peaceful people giving love freely seeking to unshackle minds, lives, and energy. Barrier breaking ceremonies, trance induced experiences. Light work purging our shadows, releasing emotions, creating love networks. Coincidences pushing events towards unknown destinations.
"Peace, Love, Unity, Respect- not just words but ideals, not just ideals but a reminder that we haven't achieved a level where we can say the words and ignore the meaning. Peace - the ability to not fight when you can. Love - The reason our world is still together. Unity - Remembering that we are just parts of the whole, helping others, and being helped. Respect - The realization we don't know everything, and that no matter how important what we are doing is, it's worthless if we cash it in for pride. We should avoid the pompous pride ego games, but never ever forget to respect ourselves. As they say: 'got to bet on yourself, cuz that's your best bet.'
"Now imagine a subculture where everyone respects themselves, and others, imagine what that subculture could do when they work together. Any group has it's ideals, and it's beautiful side, and it's dark side. The newbie sitting next to the wall listening to music but not dancing, unaware of statements like "why isn't he dancing?" is the most talented DJ of tomorrow. If everyone raved all the time, always dancing and never pushing forward, we would already have died out.
" 'Tomorrow, today will be yesterday.'
"Raving is not just listening to computer music, while tweaking with massive stimulus. Raving is not just ANYTHING. We've all seen the rave that didn't go off as well as we'd hoped. The difference is in what you do at that moment.
"Do we say "well, this sux, I'm outta here", or do we say 'I think this party needs more energy, and I'm going to give it.'
"A friend told me a story about a rave he went to on a farm. The farm had two sections, the main dance "place", and an ambient "place". There were two large fires, away from the music. The music went out at the ambient early, then the other one starting having problems. Some people started leaving, but his friends went and sat at one of the fires. There were about ten other people there(that he didn't know),For the rest of the night, none of them heard any music beyond the noise at the farm. They just talked, meeting more people than they would have otherwise. The party appeared to be a disaster, but he says it was the most positive rave he'd ever been to.
"Well, if you are still reading, I should be polite and wind down. I just wanted to make the point that raves are about people and vibes, not about who is wearing too much glitter, who is on what, knowing all the underground secrets, the lights, the visuals, or even the music. Those are all things that intensify and direct the energy.
"We are the energy. What we do with it is up to us."
