Deftones bassist Chi Cheng recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the bands upcoming new album, "Lovers", which the group plan to begin recording shortly at their own home studio with producer Terry Date (Incubus, Pantera). Here's what he had to say:
"We definitely want to put out a very energetic, very upbeat, fast album. We've proven that we can musically go in any direction we want, and we want to get kind of heavy on this one. We spent three or four months, each of us, working on our little solo projects and now we're all kind of like, 'These fucking side projects! We need to wrap them up and get back to our main focus, which is the Deftones.' Chino is trying to finish Team Sleep. I don't know how many bands Stephen's got on the side now... I can't even keep track. Everyone's trying to get their personal life in order before we jump into the whole mess of an album cycle and touring and everything else."
The band hope to release the album this fall through Maverick/Warner and are expected to begin touring around the same time, possibly as part of this years Pledge Of Allegiance Tour, which is slated to kick off in mid-October and is reportedly eyeing System Of A Down, Disturbed, Queens Of The Stone Age and Taproot for the bill.

RIP

Former Ozzy Osbourne/Motley Crue drummer Randy Castillo reportedly passed away
tuesday 26th March due to complications stemming from his long-running battle with cancer. Castillo was 51 years old.

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx posted the following message at www.motley.com following Randy's death: “You used to joke around with me all the time, saying that we had 'dented halo's'. I'll miss you my friend, and I love you.”

Prior to his passing, Castillo was reportedly working with ex-Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez and an undisclosed guitarist in a new project, which was in the process of writing music and checking out prospective singers.

It was only this past November that Castillo proclaimed himself to be “100% back, strong & kicking” in an interview posted at Crue's official web site. The drummer seemed to be particularly excited about the new band and called the experience of working with Inez “very refreshing and satisfying”.

Nobody has ever had anything bad to say about Randy and he is great loss to the Rock community, friends and family.

A memorial site has been set up for late OZZY OSBOURNE/MOTLEY CRUE drummer Randy Castillo at www.randycastillo.com.

This Post was found on the Motely Crue site, posted by Nikki Sixx, could this be a definite reunion of Motley Crue in 2003?

“To all you impatient fucking whacked out CRUEheads….

“A few years ago, we all got together an agreed to take a break to recharge the band, and come back out swinging around summer of 2003. Things seem to be right on target. [Motley Crue frontman] Vince [Neil] is doing a summer tour this year with Tesla and some other bands…. Tommy [Lee]'s album comes out soon, so there will be another T Bone tour, [guitarist] Mick [Mars] is writing and expanding his creativity as well as I.

“To have this time to enjoy my family is a gift I really need to thank the band for. We could've just keep touring and touring with the Crue, but in the end, [we were] in need of some serous time off. It's hard for a lot of people not to be greedy and run a band's name into the ground, but thank god, we all have the sense to see those pigs coming.

“Speaking of pigs… Sometimes she just c.ant u.nderstand n.ormal t.hinking f.cking whack job……she'll be a waitress in a 3rd rate strip bar in ten years…. trust me…

“Things that could make you cream your jeans this summer…

The band were originally scheduled to release both a new album later this year as well as tour as a part of the U.S. Ozzfest bill this summer, though both opportunities now look to be scrapped. Here is the Official Press Release for the Shihad Name Change

SHIHAD SPIT THE DUMMY

It's Official, the name has changed

With Shihad’s passionate fan base staging an internet and gossip riot, and with the band, management and record company under siege from media and fans in the US, New Zealand and Australia the band have made an unannounced appearance under their highly anticipated new name PACIFIER at The Viper Room in LA

When confronted after the gig front man Jonny Toogood explained the bands sudden, unpredictable and unorthodox announcement as he left for the band’s hotel shouting ..

“That should shut the fuckers up”

With the band forced into a name change for numerous reasons the process of finding a new name has been an unenviable task. After months of speculation and constant inquiry the band have confirmed that the name they played under at the Viper Room is indeed the name they love and are sticking with.

“We know many of our fans will be annoyed that we didn’t announce officially on our web site or something more formal”, Jon says, “but we are a rock band not a bank and we can’t sit still long enough for a press conference – and besides it’s tattooed on my mums back, you tell her to change it!”

Acclaimed producer Ross Robinson and ARTISTdirect Records have announced the formation of a new imprint, I AM/ARTISTdirect Records. Under this production agreement, Robinson will oversee the imprint's A&R activities, contribute to the development of its talent, as well as produce artists for I AM/ARTISTdirect Records. ARTISTdirect Records staff will handle all marketing, promotion, sales, and publicity activities for the imprint's roster, and all releases will be distributed through BMG.

Robinson's partnership with ARTISTdirect follows the termination of I AM Records' deal with Virgin Records, a collaboration which had followed a similar arrangement with Roadrunner Records.

Although Robinson's signings via the I AM imprint had generated much critical acclaim and press attention, only Slipknot has achieved any kind of commercial success thus far, with the likes of Amen and Glassjaw having failed to light up the charts in a manner that would justify their substantial hype.

Among the first releases under the agreement between I AM and ARTISTdirect will be the debut CD from Seattle's The Blood Brothers, who are scheduled to begin recording the effort on March 20th with Robinson at the helm. A late summer/early fall release is expected.

The incident apparently occurred during the last song of the bands set. It is thought that Patton had a prior altercation with security that night and seized the moment as revenge, though no official statement has been released as of yet.

Official Press Statement
Personally written by Burton C. Bell

http://ubb.fearfactory.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=003421

On Saturday, March 2nd, 2002, I met with all the members of FEAR FACTORY. At that meeting I announced my personal feelings about the present situation within the band. I have been unhappy for quite sometime both interpersonally, and business wise, and that has rendered me creatively restrained. After extensive deliberation within my self, I decided that the best possible answer I was comfortable with was to leave the band.
This is not a whimsical advance into the unknown, it is something that I have been thinking about for quite sometime. I have kept my feelings and realizations to myself until it was evident that it was a relationship that was unproductive to me as an artist. This decision was a sudden development to most everyone to whom I am familiar with.
We have experienced many highs, and just as many lows in the span of 12 years, and I do not regret a single moment. I have searched within me, every possible avenue of execution in making this decision and I feel that for me, and my growth as an artist, moving forward is the best possible solution. I would like to extend my wishes to the guys “the best of luck in their future endeavors”. I will miss the relationship I had with the fans and I want to thank them for their support through all the years.

Sevendust will be appearing on "Last Call With Carson Daly" in early April. The band will be performing a special acoustic version of their latest single, "Live Again". An exact air date is expected to be announced shortly.

FLAW have been added to the upcoming Kittie Tour which also features Skinlab and My Ruin. The outing was originally referred to as the "Fuck Yer Label" Tour by My Ruin, who explained the reasoning behind the name saying:
"Spitfire Records licensed both of My Ruin's previous efforts in the US from ex-label Snapper Music in the UK, without either knowledge or consent of the band, and did nothing whatsoever in the way of support or promotion. That rendered us unable to tour in the US at a time when we should have been everywhere. It was our personal name for this outing, in no way a reflection on the feelings of the other bands, and not meant to be shared with the group."

Prong have re-united with an entirely new line-up sans band vocalist/guitarist Tommy Victor. The group are currently shopping a new 3 song demo to interested labels and are planning to embark on a national tour early next month. Dates are expected shortly.

Jerry Cantrell is now planning to hit the road on a tour set to kick off during the first week of May through till early July. More info is expected shortly. In other news, "Anger Rising", the first single from his upcoming new album, "Degradation Trip", is now set to impact at radio on April 22nd. The album itself will follow, landing in stores on June 25th through Roadrunner/Island/Def Jam.

Coal Chamber have set the tentative track listing to their upcoming new album, "Dark Days", due out through Roadrunner/Island/Def Jam on May 07th. It shapes up as follows:

04 - "Something Told Me"
05 - "Dark Days"
06 - "Alienate Me"
07 - "One Step"
08 - "Friend"
09 - "Row Boat"
10 - "Drove"
11 - "Empty Jar"
12 - "Beckoned"

Metallica's collaboration with rapper Ja Rule and producer Swizz Beatz in the form of a track called 'We Did It' (not 'We Did It Again', as previously reported), taken from the Swizz Beatz compilation album G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories, will be going for adds at rock radio in the coming weeks, according to a brand new MTV.com report. There are also tentative plans for acclaimed director Hype Williams to direct a split-screen video for the song, which should hit outlets in May. "I want to show Metallica got one world going on, Ja got the other," Beatz told MTV.

The compilation CD was originally scheduled to be issued through Dreamworks Records on May 14th, but has now apparently been delayed until June 11th for reasons that were not disclosed.

As previously reported, the Metallica track will be the only rock cut on the album, which will also include songs from Ronald Isley and Shyne, among others. 'We Did It' will feature Ja Rule rapping over two 12-bar verses accompanied by the group's trademark crunch, which—in its updated form—will reportedly include contributions from vocalist / guitarist James Hetfield (who was in rehab when the original track was laid down last August).

Mike Patton of Faith No More/Mr Bungle/Toma Hawk/Fantomas, commented to Metal Hammer recently on the Nu Metal Genre and their influence as Faith No More, a band that paved a way for Nu Metal Bands, this is what he had to say:
"Nu metal makes my stomach turn. Don't blame that shit on us, blame it on their mothers! Do you think I listen to any of that stuff at all? No, it's for 13-year-old morons! Believe me, we'll all be laughing about nu-metal in a couple of years. Heck, I'm actually laughing at it now!"

Drowning Pool have posted on their official website, www.drowningpool.com, that they have been confirmed to appear on the Main Stage of this years coming Ozzfest trek. Fear Factory's break-up has now been officially confirmed by their label, Roadrunner Records. A statement from them on the matter is available here  . The split was apparently ignited by band frontman Burton C. Bell's unhappiness with the group as he announced to the rest of the band this past Saturday, March 02nd, that he would be leaving them. It seems that the split wasn't entirely amicable either as band guitarist Dino Cazares recently commented to LAUNCH on the situation stating:
"Burton pussed out and quit Fear Factory."
This seemingly adds to the rumors which had been spreading as of late regarding inner tension between Cazares and Bell. Despite the groups dissolution though, plans are currently being made to release their never before heard 1991 16 song debut album, "Concrete", which was helmed by then at the time unknown producer, Ross Robinson (Korn, Slipknot). The band will also still be hitting the studio this coming Tuesday, March 12th with producer Rick Will (Incubus) to track new material for an upcoming "Terminator" video game, a recording session which is expected to serve as their final time recording together. In the meantime, aside from Bell whose immediate plans for the future are currently unknown, the members of the group will remain active through their side projects as guitarist Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera have a project dubbed Asesino, which also features Static-X bassist Tony Campos. The band have already begun recording material and Slipknot bassist Paul Grey/#2 has contributed a guest appearance. Meanwhile, Cazares and Herrera are also members of Brujeria, while bassist Christian Olde Wolbers has been involved with Cypress Hill and Kush, a project which also features Herrera, Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter and B-Real of Cypress Hill

Slaves on Dope are preparing to work on some new songs for their future album with Jason Slater (Snake River Conspiracy) and Troy Van Leeuwen (A Perfect Circle).

Filter will issue their long-awaited new CD, entitled The Amalgamut, through Reprise Records in July, to be preceded by the album's first single sometime in June. As previously reported, The Amalgamut was mixed by Patrick and producers Rae Dileo and Ben Grosse at Los Angeles' The Mixroom Studios and “is sonically the most incredible record we've been a part of,” according to Patrick. The tentative track listing for the effort is as follows (in no specific order):

01. You Walk Away

02. The American Cliche

03. Columind

04. Where Do We Go From Here

05. So I Quit

06. It Feels Like That You're With Me And Against Me

07. My Long Walk to Jail

08. The Missing10. I Like the World Today

Marilyn Manson has completed work on 11 songs for their upcoming album, which is currently being recorded at a Los Angeles studio for a tentative late spring/early summer release through Nothing/Interscope Records.

The as-yet-untitled album is reportedly being co-produced by Manson and Tim Skold (KMFDM, ex-Shotgun Messiah) and is said to be inspired by groups like Ministry, Big Black, Nitzer Ebb and French expected.writer Marquis de Sade. An appearance by Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison (on guitar, no less), among other guests, is expected.

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx has collaborated with Tantric frontman Hugo Ferreira on a brand new track entitled 'Going Under', a demo of which was laid down at Sixx's home studio on Saturday. At the present time, there are no plans to release the song to the record-buying public, although a possibility apparently exists that the track may surface on the follow-up to Tantric's gold-selling debut CD (an album that Sixx calls “one of the most listenable albums of the year”).

Industrial Rock Pioneers Ministry Signs To Sanctuary Records; Live Debut CD Sphinctour Slated For March 19th, 2002 Release; DVD/VHS To Be Released on April 9th

At a time when trends are becoming skewed and hybrid artists are becoming the norm, Chicago's Ministry still stands tall as a true innovator. Initially experimenting with a fusion of menacing guitar riffery with electro-industrial samples & loops, the band essentially created the crossover genre of Industrial Hard Rock, serving as an influence to a wellspring of budding artists, from Nine Inch Nails and White Zombie to Fear Factory and Orgy. The band more recently achieved notable success with tracks on the extremely popular Matrix soundtrack and in the Steven Spielberg film, A.I. Now, celebrating their 20th Anniversary, Ministry has signed with Sanctuary Records, the home of other such genre definers as Megadeth, Biohazard and Rob Halford, as well as industrial-driven peers like Gravity Kills and Pitchshifter.

Possessing a flair for the enigmatic, the band spearheaded an unlikely marriage between harsh melancholy and black humor. Thus, the band's March 19th debut release for Sanctuary is a special live album entitled Sphinctour.

Recorded at various shows around the globe, the disc (and subsequent home video) captures Ministry in top form, mixing cold, calculated precision with raucous chaos in a circus of mayhem; the very crux of a Ministry performance. The result is a more powerful and intense live release than even their own classic 1990 live EP In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up (which was recorded prior to, and therefore does not include tracks from band's breakthrough, platinum-selling album Psalm 69). Vocalist Al Jourgenson reminisces the energy transfer of a Ministry show: "We just hammered out one song after another, and I'd see all of these young headbangers and kids with shark-fin Mohawks getting winded. By the time we'd play 'Thieves', they had to play Tag Team Moshpit with their friends, because they couldn't keep up with us cranky f**kers."

Ministry plans to promote the signing and new release with a major headline tour occurring this summer, and is currently in the studio recording their debut studio album for Sanctuary. "It's going to be called Animositisomina," beams Jourgenson. "It's the word 'animosity' spelled forwards and backwards, minus the 'y.' It's double the hatred and double the time on my hands..."

San Francisco’s Skinlab helped pioneer a sound incorporating extraordinarily heavy, down-tuned guitars,an unquestionably sincere vocal delivery and percussion that ranges from pummeling to groovy. This sound has since been corrupted, assuming the bastard shape of “nu-metal” that has plagued modern rock for several years. In 2002, Skinlab will re-claim the sound they introduced to the world by releasing reVoltingRoom this spring. The first step in this process – taking the new tunes straight to their fans – will be a three week tour with Soil and Headstrong, that will coincide with a slew of headlining gigs on the off-nights of the tour.

The next step in decontaminating rock will come in the more tangible form of their new album, reVoltingRoom. The culmination of three years worth of writing, recording and touring, reVoltingRoom is not only Skinlab’s heaviest record, but also their most mature and focused offering yet.

Soil selected Skinlab as touring partners for the next leg of their tour in support of Scars (J Records), for which they have already toured with Ozzy Osbourne, Static X and Soulfly. Headstrong (RCA Records) will also be on the bill in support of their self-titled debut.

Former Guns N' Roses and current A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese is sitting behind the kit during the recording sessions for Medication's full-length debut, according to the group's management. Although Amen sticksman Shannon Larkin was strongly rumored to be playing the drums on the upcoming CD, it now appears that Larkin will only handle the drumming duties during the band's upcoming live performances until the group have secured a permanent replacement for the recently-departed Roy Mayorga (currently in Soulfly). Medication, who feature in their ranks former Machine Head/Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader, ex-Ugly Kid Joe/Life Of Agony vocalist Whitfield Crane, ex-Adayinthelife guitarist Blunt, and ex-The Piece Dogs bassist Kyle Sanders, will issue their long-awaited five-song EP through Locomotive Music on April 2nd, to be followed by the aforementioned full-length on June 22nd. The first single from the EP, "Inside", will be released to radio in the coming weeks.

The full track listing for the EP is as follows:

01. Something New

02. Underwater

03. Inside

04. No Direction

05. Need to Never

Medication will be performing a one-off show at Domsport in Köln-Deutz, Germany on March 19th, to be followed by a gig at the Key club in West Hollywood, California on March 23rd.

Although Medication have yet to find a permanent replacement for Mayorga, they have been auditioning a host of drummers in the recent weeks, including current Strife/Downset/Blue Murder skinsman Aaron “Fat Beat” Rossi, who was previously reported (apparently erroneously) to have landed the spot.

The diaries and notebooks of Nirvana singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain were purchased by Riverhead Books, a division of Penguin Putnam, for 4 million dollars, and a published compilation will be in stores by November. The proceeds from the book will go to the Cobain estate.

“The journals are an intimate portrait of an artist of great influence,” said Julie Grau, Riverhead's co-editorial director.

Cobain's notebook and diaries, which he began keeping when he was a teenager, are said to include black-and-white drawings, lyrics, lists of musicians who influenced him, and a handwritten draft of Nirvana's classic Smells Like Teen Spirit. The book was culled from 23 notebooks and more than 800 pages. The final version is expected to contain 350 pages.

Biohazard have been writing material for the group's forthcoming album while on the road and are hoping to enter the studio during the summer to begin recording the CD for an early 2003 release through Sanctuary Records.

Los Angeles cyber-metallers Fear Factory have completed writing the music for five songs towards the group's next studio CD, which they hope to record during the summer for a late 2002/early 2003 release through Roadrunner Records. Among the already-penned compositions is an as-yet-untitled number that will be used in the new Terminator game that is due to come out sometime in August.

Primus will be putting out digitally remastered re-releases of both, "Suck On This", and, "Frizzle Fry", on April 23rd. The "Frizzle Fry" re-release will feature a rare cover/medley of The Residents' "Hello Skinny"/"Constantinople", as a bonus track. Both CD's will be available for pre-order exclusively through www.clubbastardo.com beginning later today. In other news, Les Claypool has had a change of plans and is now instead currently recording a new Frog Brigade studio album at his own Rancho Relaxo Studios. Performances from Eenor, Skerik, Jay Lane (Sausage), Mike Dillon (Critters Buggin') and Warren Haynes (Govt. Mule) have all been tracked for the effort thus far. In the meantime, the Frog Brigade will be embarking on a number of dates, including a west coast tour from April 18th through till the 26th. Dates are expected to be announced for that trek shortly, but in the meantime the bands current touring schedule is as follows:

March 05th New Orleans, LA - State Palace Theater (Feat. Gov't Mule)

March 07th Mariaville, NY - Gathering Of Vibes (Feat. Gov't Mule)

May 04th Atlanta, GA - Music Midtown Festival

May 05th New Orleans, LA - Tipitina's

.   Former Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha is heavily rumored to be making a guest appearance on the upcoming new effort from Blackalicious, "Blazing Arrow". The album, due out on April 30th, will also feature guest appearances from DJ Shadow, Chali 2na and Cut Chemist of Jurrasic 5, ?uestlove of the Roots, Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, Saul Williams and more. In related news, little is still known about De la Rocha's upcoming solo effort for Epic, aside from him having done eight songs with Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, five with Roots drummer ?uestlove and collaborations with both DJ Premier of Gang Starr fame and El-P formerly of Company Flow. No release date has been set for the effort as of yet.

Soulfly have now set a tentative June 25th release through Roadrunner/Island/Def Jam for their forthcoming new album, tentatively titled, "Soulfly III: Enterfaith".

Members of Fear Factory will be working with producer Rick Well for one song for Playstation. I heard some riffs for the upcoming FF album last night and it sounds very "Invisible Wounds" style - very tight.

  ANSELMO DENIES BREAK-UP RUMORS

Philip Anselmo issued an unequivocal "F*ck no" to the recent rumors that PANTERA are breaking up. It seemed the rumors kicked up during a press junket for Anselmo and fellow PANTERA bandmember Rex Brown's side project, the band DOWN. "Side projects always start rumors," stated a spokesperson for PANTERA's management. "It's the nature of the beast." Add Anselmo to the mix and writers get a little itchy. "What can I say," says Anselmo. "I love PANTERA. I'm excited about DOWN. I'm lucky to be in a place where I can make great f*cking music with both bands. We're going into the studio sometime later this year to record the new PANTERA album. End of story."

Meanwhile, the second DOWN album, Down II, hits stores March 26th, with a tour scheduled later this spring.

Nirvana fans may get a special treat later this year. Sources close to the family of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain say Cobain's extensive journals, which he kept throughout his life, are making the rounds in New York publishing circles. "Kurt's family is trying to publish a book based on his writings," said one source. "There are lyrics, drawings, essays about his career plans for Nirvana, updated lists of his favorite records, and extensive writings on drug use, the media" and the band's history. The book could boost Courtney Love in her fight against bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic over control of the group's legacy. Love maintains Cobain was its creative force, and that she, as his widow, should be in charge. "There is a lot of interest," says our source. "Kurt was remarkably insightful, funny and complicated. This book will be a primer for all young rock musicians and an education for everyone who thought they knew him." James Barber, representing Cobain's estate, is negotiating with publishers.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are currently in intensive songwriting sessions for the follow-up to the group's quadruple-platinum Californication CD, which is tentatively set for a June release. Guitarist John Frusciante recently commented on the initial rehearsals for the forthcoming effort: "There was just all kinds of new rhythms and new sounds and nobody really sounded anything like themselves. We weren't playing the way we play on Californication. The energy, the whole energy was even more so whatever the energy on Californication is. It was that energy multiplied. That alone makes me really excited about the next record because we just have a completely new sound just because we've all given a lot of thought to music in the last year-and-a-half and we've gotten really tight."
