i can also hear a second guitar, playing just D-G/G-D on the verse
part, and i've seen the "all the ants are marching" section written
out as bass triads; G (3 2 0 x x x) D/F# (2 0 0 x x x) E (0 2 2 x x x).
it sounds good either way to me and in the end it's up to your ear.

this riff is used throughout the song, and is easiest to master if
you use index finger for all 2s and 5s on the low e-string, your
ring finger for all 3s and 7s on the low e-string, your middle finger
on all 2s and 6s on the d-string, and your pinky for all 4s and 7s on
the d-string.  and an easier way to master this song is to watch dave
carefully if you ever get the chance.  it may sound like a simplistic
way, but if you can get up closer to him, you'd be amazed at how his
progressions stand out in your mind when you get back to your own axe,
even if you were standing thirty feet away from him.

The step motion in the bass is something I am not sure exactly if he plays
but I get the feeling of, and that is what I used when I performed the song.
If you just want the chords then ignore then tab in between them. Also,
listen to his rhythmic strumming variations and also let yourself have some
fun with the song. I'll try and remember the solo in there too and send it

When playing I'll back you up, I play 2nd verse chord not as an Ab but
as an E was an Ab in the bass.

Just a simple C-form bar chord. Dave also uses this chord formation to
play the F in Jimi Thing, which is what tipped me off in the first
place.
When you play the chord in the C form you can get more of the full chord
sound that Dave has.
