biography ...In 1994, high school students Laanan Fisher and Dj Biek got together to create what was then a two-person, all around jam band. Little did they know of the future of this endeavor, nor what lay in store for them ahead. Armed with a 10-inch Exterminator amplifier, and a broken-down Ludwig drumkit, they took a St. Joe pep rally by force. Hardly known, onlookers even then could feel the electricity throughout the gym. After a year and a half, machine - (who was then calling themselves Rotide Lif) - picked up a third member to add to this double, Patrick Sherman. Patrick was brought in as a backup guitarist, and for his credit cards - (both of which are appreciated to this day). Soon their arsenal had grown to 1 15" speaker and a set of guitars. A few months after Patrick was taken under wing, Laanan met with a few friends, coincidentally, to watch "Friends". Laanan, always learning geared, brought along his Exterminator and his Harmony. At one point during the night, some guy asked if he could play. Laanan said sure, and handed the guitar to what was going to be his future lead singer. Shortly thereafter, Rotide Lif played at a company party, still with only their small PA. The band's good friend Joe Couch, and hereafter known as "#1 Fan", witnessed the event, and pondered of the band's lack of a dedicated singer. But, he remembers a friend he has that often sings karaoke, and often with a few beers in him. The next day, #1 Fan invites this friend over to meet with the band, who recently changed their name to Opiate. You guessed it. The very same friend who asked for the guitar on that fateful night, and who often sings drunken karaoke, is one in the same. Opiate gains a fourth member: Jack Hull. With the addition of this lead singer, Opiate gains 1. a place to practice, albeit scorching in the summer, and arctic-like in the winter, in Jack's garage and 2. a new name: machine degenerate. Practicing went on until both guitarists fingers froze off, then moved to Laanan's garage. There, the band continued to lengthen their list of cover songs, all the while missing a key element to pull it all together: a bassist. Jack, always being the thinking ahead type, scheduled a gig at a local bar with machine degenerate still without a bassist. Hard times. The band puts out flyers for the needed fifth at nearly all the music stores in the area. No one answered. machine files for lawsuit against Jack. Just before it goes through, however, Patrick gets a call from a guy who says he's interested in the job. This guy comes over to practice about two weeks before the gig. All agreed that this guy will more than do for the band. What is this gy's name? ... Hmm ... let's cee ... Anyway, machine has done countless shows since then, and has started to work on it's own niche in the music world. |
