INERTIA began in the summer of 1996, when Pete Meacham, who was just discovering his powerful singing voice, joined together with Tim Hercock, a talented multi-instrumentalist, and Saul Thorne, rhythm guitarist par excellence, to form INERTIA mark one, known then as MAMMOTH. Unhindered by such obvious problems as lack of a drummer, the fledgling group began to practise playing covers before starting to write their own material. At this early date Pete took sole responsibility for both lyrics and music but his songwriting abilities were not what they now are. Little of this early material survives in today's group. Having tried out a Spinal Tap-like variety of drummers, the band was enlarged to a five-piece and renamed INERTIA in 1997 with the addition of permanent drummer James Curry and keyboardist Jess Orlick. By this time INERTIA were playing gigs at events at Brislington School's Sixth Form and the School itself, where they would invariably be well recieved. Their classic gigs were of course the "Christmas Gigs" of 1997 and 1998 - any true INERTIA fan should be able to say "I was there". By late 1998 however Jess's commitment level to the group was declining drastically and she eventually left at the beginning of 1999. The group was at this stage reshuffled for greater flexibility to compensate for this, Pete began to play lead guitar parts on some songs. Tim took on keyboarding roles along with his bass guitar playing and backing vocals, and another new member was added to the group, drummer Matt Knapp, to compensate for the loss of James At the time of writing, this is how the group stands:
Pete Meacham (Lead vocals, lead guitar)
Saul Thorne (Rhythm guitar)
Tim Hercock (Backing vocals, bass guitar, keyboard)
Matt Knapp (Drums)
