Somewhere In Time
After the interlude that Live After Death afforded the band, Somewhere In Time marked a new approach, a new sound, with the introduction of synthesisers, which created a much richer sound.
Also, while still a pounding, driving album, a true heavy metal classic, at the same time it was all a lot more subtly done than Powerslave, with more vocal harmonies than had ever been heard on a Maiden album before.
Also noticeable is the prominence of Adrian Smith's compositions. While Piece Of Mind was still very much dominated by Steve Harris' songs, with contributions from Bruce Dickinson, Powerslave had seen Dickinson's songs dominate, and now Somewhere In Time was Adrian Smith's "turn" to dominate.
Another slight change was with the subject matter of the epic: whereas previously it had been devoted to works of fiction, this time we are given a history lesson, with the tale of Alexander The Great!
Truly a superb album, sometimes overlooked for its brilliance doe to its being sandwiched by the masterpieces of Powerslave and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Eddie rating:9/10
