The Charlatans UK.....The Jo Whiley Interview.

Part One:
JO: Okay tell us about Melting Pot, were the record company saying okay youve been here so many years and its about time you brought out a greatest hits album?

TIM: Its like, we wanted to sort of leave Beggars and we had to give them 6 LPs so we had to make one up.

JO: How did you select which trax you were going to use, was there sort of in band fighting over it?

TIM: there was sort of a couple of fall outs over a couple of trax, But I mean generallyit was sort of like

JO: It was fairly obvious what trax to choose?

TIM: Nah, but it was just like if you make a tape for someone you sort of go with what you thinks gonna sound right next and stuff, you know

JO: Its almost like Djing, its like doing your ultimate set, playing your own records

TIM: Its just like if we had what we thought was sort of different moments of what wed done, just to say weve not always sort of been like a pop group or were a bit more un..er..un..catergorisable (laugh) or whatever you call it, how do you call it?

JO: Invent new words on the radio!!

TIM: Uncatergorisable

JO: Are there certain tracks that you know are really popular with the fans, cause youve got a pretty loyal fan base?

TIM: Oh yeah, we put on a track called Here Comes a Soul Saver cause I think it was a bit sort of live favourite.

Caller 1: Do you think that bands from the north of Britain have more to offer music wise?

TIM: I dunno, cause north is compared to like London, but its like were all sort of from different parts, it was like a sort of mixture of people anyway, I think it was sort of the fact we were all into one thing really which was being in a group, trying to change something, you know make people feel better.

JO: What do you think to people who bang on about were from Manchester and therefore have more substance to our band?

TIM: I dont think that is right, I think that regionalises everything, I think musics from the heart, yeah, I think thats a hard one to answer.

Caller 2: Tim what do you sing in the shower?

TIM: What do I sing in the shower?? Ermmm

JO: He doesnt wash, he doesnt have showers!

TIM: Yeah, Im dirty. No but a load of stuff really, and I sort of practice a lot, to get mi technique right (laughs)
JO: Your vocal range!

TIM: Sort of um, stuff that were working on at the moment really.

JON: Do you really? I didnt know that

JO: Well play a track off the album, whats your favourite track off Melting Pot?

JON: I like Opportunity 3 miself.

TIM: Its about 20 minutes long!! (laughs)

JO: Well could you choose one thats a bit shorter

JON: Ah, well, .Easy Lifethats a good one

TIM: Yeah, yeah good one.

JO: I just wanted to find out, bands that you really like at the moment, and.you're writing at the moment, is that what youre up to?

JON: Ah yeah, well, everybodys tucked away..

TIM: Everybody just keeps going skiing

JO: Skiing or snowboarding, which one do you?

JON: I had a go at both, I couldnt do either!

JO: Retired due to injury (laughs)

JON: Yeah that is..dont ask me about writing..

JO: We just thought maybe you had social lives back and maybe you were going out seeing bands and kind of keeping in touch while youre writing.

TIM: Have we seen anyone? Weve not really seen anyone at all, cause um, we havent got a social life (laughs)

JO: Cause you have no friends, no life

TIM: Listen to records really and just sort of stay in

JO: So whats some of your favourite records at the moment, what do you want us to play?

TIM: Lambchopa track called the man who loved beer

JO: Is this on the album How I quit smoking?

TIM: Yeah, yeah

JO: So what is it about Lambchop that you like, do you follow them quite closely?

TIM: To be honest with ya, Ive only just started sort of getting into them, and it was a friend of mine put a compilation tape up for us, and I just sort of got obsessed really and bought all their records and Im gonna write to them and stuff, see if we can bring em over and get em live.

JO: Have them play with you..that would be good!

TIM: That would be amazing, some things just get to you like that and you have to go out and buy all their records and youre hooked..its a good thing about music.

JO: Do you understand then the people that are really into your music then?

TIM: Well its different really, innit, cause youre looking at it from the other way.

JO: Do you always take time to sign autographs and talk to people in the street?

TIM: Oh yeah yeah, I mean you dont.

JO: Unless its Richard Branson of course..

TIM:oh yeah..right! (laughs) at the same time as youre feeling a bit weird signing an autograph if you told them that you couldnt do it youd just rub people up the wrong way so youve gotta. You know if someone comes up to ya and tells you that youve done sommat really good, it sorta makes you feel pretty bouncy for the rest of the day, its a good feeling that somebodys actually acknowledged what youve done.

JO: This is a fax that came through earlier about the interview you did for FHM

TIM: Oh yeah, about meat or sommat
Part Two:
JO: no, its about trainers, He says hes got an original pair of Adidas Wimbledons

TIM: No way!

JO: And an original Fila..Bourg????

TIM: BJ

JO: BJ, navy blue, How much would you give him for themare they priceless?

TIM: Yeah they are priceless yeah

JO: So have you got a huge collection of trainers?

TIM: Yeah I have, but erm, Wimbledons I had a pair in sort of like 81 or sommat, late 70s early 80s, and its like your favourite pair of trainers wear out and you go to get some more and theyve gone..gone forever

JO: Do you them, you dont chuck them away?

TIM: I did chuck them away then always sort of wanted another pair

JO: Call us now and Tim will give you vast amounts of money for them!!

TIM: Size 7,8 or 9 (laughs) Well I can take all sizes..

JO: So how many pairs have you got?

TIM: Dunno about 40.

JO: 40???!!! (laughs) The Imelda Marcos of The Charlatans.
TIM: Ive got about 40 record players as well!! I collect stupid stuff.

JO: You got a big house?

TIM: Yeah sort of, pretty big yeah. Its a mansion!!!

Caller 3: A couple of years ago you did a gig with Ride where you both shared the headline, I was just wondering who youd do it with now?

TIM: Chemical Brothers probably.

JON: Yeah that would be a good one.

JO: What plans have you got for touringover the next year??

JON: Ah well, hopefully we can do some festivals in the summer. Dunno which ones yet, but mainly this year were gonna put another LP together.

JO: Do you reckon it will be available for people to buy by the end of the year?

JON: I wouldnt like to say

JO: Whats going on with the rest of the band, I hear theres babies on the way and stuff?

JON: Yeah there is actually, there is one baby on the wayIm erm, 8 months pregnant at the moment..

JO: And looking very good on it (laughs)

JON: thank you (laughs)

JO: When you were putting this album together did it bring back memories of sort of the life and times of the Charlatans? I used to book bands and I remember you on the word in the early days, do you remember being on the word?

TIM: I think, it was sort of first series I think.

JO: It was, would that have been one of the first tvs you did?

TIM: Yeah I think

JO: Can you remember what it was like?

JON: Yeah brilliant, it was like live on tv for the first time, which was what we always wanted to do, it was mega, that was really good.

JO: Did you watch it back and get friends and family to watch it?

TIM: I remember watching Ready Steady Cook me, its brilliant

JO: Would you say it is an ambition of yours to be on Ready Steady Cook?

TIM: No but I do like Brian Turner, I think hes good

JO: Are you a good cook?

TIM: yeah

JON: He is actually

JO: Do you have dinner parties?

TIM: Nah, just do scampi for everyone (laughs)

JO: Were going to play the track that everybody voted as their favourite track, what do you think that would be?

TB: Ermm One to Anotheris that right..yeah..

JON: Yeah I like that one!

JO: Thanks a lot for coming in today

TIM: No thanx for havin us!
