The Savage Gardener #57

Hello everyone! Well, after nearly choking to death on a nice candy (eek! What
would have happened to the SGer??) AND finally getting confident behind the
wheel of a car (look out southern California!) I've finally gotten the next
issue done. For those of you who saw the Hard Rock Live performance last
Friday, I'm sure you cracked up as hard as I did during a certain part!! For
those who didn't see it, I have the full story and the transcript in this
issue...all you gotta do is SCROLL DOWN!!

**The boys rocked Hard Rock Live last Friday, performing four songs (in order:
Truly Madly Deeply, To the Moon and Back, Santa Monica, and I Want You).
Darren thanked the crowd for "bringing us to America", which I thought was
really sweet! They did a BEAUTIFUL version of TTMAB in which they took the
ending music (that gorgeous orchestra music) and placed it at the beginning. I
love it! Anyway, you're probably wondering what was so hilarious! Well, there
I was, in the middle of the night watching it for the first time (I had gone
to Disneyland that day and had to watch it when I got home) and Daniel said
the cutest, funniest thing which caused me to crack up and my mom heard me all
the way in her room and asked what was so funny! I'll explain it now...

Ok, Darren was saying this beautiful speech about their success and what he
hopes will happen (Hard Rock Live has little clips of an interview they do and
show it after commercial breaks) and it was just...well...beautiful! Then
Daniel pops in with this comment that is oh-so-Daniel! So here's the
transcript:

DARREN: Success to us about consistency. And...we've made one album. We might
never be around again. You know, we'd like to have the opportunity to, and,
um, the one thing I can guarantee is that we'll always write songs [Daniel
nods]. I can't guarantee that they'll always chart. You know, music is like
fashion, and I can't change that, you can't, no one can. But, you know, we'll
always want it as badly as this and we'll always do it and we'll just see how
it goes. And maybe we'll look back in ten years' time and we will have had a
few albums and a few singles, and we'll have a set list that goes for two
hours and every song is a single.

DANIEL: Or we could be fat and bald and go, "I was a pop star once".

Then Daniel flashes Daz the most ADORABLE smile and Darren turns his whole
body towards Daniel and has this look on his face like "what the heck...?". It
was soooo funny!!

But more! I honestly in my whole life have never seen a band rock like when
they performed I Want You!! Anna and Nicole were jamming like there was no
end! It was lots of fun to watch! And then through the whole show Daniel kept
flashing that grin of his and making Darren laugh and they both bounced around
the stage like they were made of rubber. It was so cute! A band that sounds
great and is fun to watch - you can't get any better than that!!!

**To the Moon and Back jumps up 1 spot to #15 this week on the Rick Dees
Weekly Top 40 countdown!

**Here are the Billboard stats: Truly is now at #23 while Moon jumps back to
#25. The album jumps up 4 spots to the #24 place!

                                            Savage Trivia

Last week's trivia question was: What country was Daniel obsessed with when he
was a little kid? The answer is: Canada! Daniel's mom (or should I say "mum"?)
bought him books on Canada when he was a little kid that were worn out within
days because he was reading them so much! Isn't that cute?? Also, the guys
would really like to record parts of their new album in Canada. Congrats to
those who got it right (a lot of you!):

This week's question is: Ok, so basically all of you know the story of the
girl in Darren's French class that he had the huge crush on and how he walked
by her house everyday for a year until he found out it wasn't her house,
right? Well, what is the girl's name? Since I can't remember what her last
name was, I'll only ask for her first name. And coincidentally, her first name
is French (gee, that really narrows it down!). Ok, so what's her name?

Hi, I'm one of the newest Gardeners in Japan.  I'd like to congratulate on
your work!  You are doing a very good job!  I'd like to contribute some info I
have now.

You said you'd recommend the Japanese import CD with rare tracks, and I
agree with you 100%!  This is a very good CD.  It's literally a must!  A new
Japan-only CD (_Break Me Shake Me + 4 Rare Tracks_) was released on
August 5.

In Japan the first video collection is scheduled to be released on October
7.  To promote this, Sony Japan holds several "video concert" in some cities
in Japan.  The first concert was held in Nagoya today.  It was shorter than I
expected(about 40 minutes long), but we could see some rare videos including a
video message exclusively for Japanese fans and live of "One of Us" and "Santa
Monica" from Hard Rock live in New York in July. There was a drawing, too.
Some people got goods like T-shirts and caps.

About "Mine," it is included in the first album released here in Japan--so it
has 13 songs.  I had to buy two first albums because I wanted to know what
this song was like.  "Mine" is one of my most favorite songs.

The latest issue of a Japanese Rock'n'Roll magazine _INROCK_ featured SG on
their front cover for the first time in Japan.  Also, the magazine gave out
a message CD(not on sale) which has a part of interview of Darren recorded
by the magazine, along with other boys' groups' messages.  I'm working on
the transcription now.

Cheers from Japan

Like I said in my reply to you, thanks so much for the info!!! And to anyone
else reading this, it's true! I just checked it out and Mine WAS released on
the Japanese CD, which confuses yours truly very much! Columbia brings Savage
Garden to Japan too, so why in the world would they release it there when they
told Darren and Daniel they wouldn't? I'll have to include this in my letter
to Columbia which will accompany the petition! Anyhoo, thanks again! ~Lauren

Could you put this in the newsletter please? :)

I have finally gotten my site back up and working, so people with frames-
capable browsers will see a lot of difference in my site. I have added a
section with people's names (or nicknames) and ICQ numbers or e-mail addresses
so that people can contact the others on the list and talk about Savage Garden
or whatever else they wish. There is a section for ICQ people and a section
for AOL Instant Messenger people. If you would like to see this list, go here:
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Frontrow/5243/
and click on the ICQ/AIM list tab. If you would like to be added to the list,
you can either e-mail me with the information specified on the page or message
me on ICQ or AIM. This is just a way for Savage Garden fans to get together,
and maybe you'll find someone who lives near you!
Thank you!

Hi Lauren!

I was wondering if you could put this in the SGer. It`s a bit of an emergency
!!  We had our computer in, to get a new modem, and new A-drive.  But, they
also restored it to factory condition, which erased all my SG pics.  I had
over 200.  So, if anyone has any, and would like to help me out, please Email
them to [email protected] or K Luvs [email protected]

Also, if anyone reading the SGer lives in Calgary, Alberta Canada, please
Email me too.  Thanks!

I wanted to share the following information in the savagegardener if you
would like to post it...

I was doing alot of cleaning and reorganizing in my apartment and I kept the
tv on a rotating basis between mtv and vh1 to listen to videos and still work
at the same time. on aug. 3, 12:30pm central time (arizona time) say what? on
mtv was hosted by matt and the original video for to the moon and back was
shown! It was my first time seeing it and I nearly dropped and broke an
antique vase I was holding at the time! I was in such a shock and really
enjoyed the video. Matt is the same host for the I spy segment which another
fan spotted the original video last month. I think Matt is a fan of the guys!
:)

Thanks so much for the info! This is the second known sighting of the original
TTMAB video on MTV! I hope they show it again - it's a classic!! And
very...blue (the color, not the emotion)! ~Lauren :o)

I love your Newsletter. I think it's filled with a lot of USEFUL info..
Anyhoo... I have one quick question... When I went to the concert on Aug.
25th, Daz sang a song that I didn't know. He come out dressed in black jeans,
a tight (hmm) white T-shirt, and a lab jacket. Plus he has doofy silver
glasses on. The girls were dressed in tall silver boots, silver skirts (if
that's what you call them), and silver wigs. What song did they sing with
these costumes on? I couldn't figure it out. Ohmigod! Rod Steward was there
with his family. The concert was great. Except I wish they had more stuff for
sale. Everyone was angry after the concert. The crew told certain people that
they were gonna come out after the concert and sign autographs. Well, they
never came. We were all standing there for an hour or more, waiting for them.
They went out a side door and never came out to sign stuff. All I have to say
is, I hope the pics I took come out. I also have two more quick questions...
Where can you send stuff to get it autographed? And, I need the Hard Rock
Live, & FANatic on tape. If anyone has it, I'll pay for them to make me a
copy.. E-mail me and let me know. Thanks for reading such a long comment...

DarenSvGrd

The song you're talking about is All Around Me - that was definitely the most
colorful number of the entire night! And as for the autograph thingy - that
really sucks! I can't believe Darren and Daniel would do that (unless, of
course, their dear tour manager Brendan had a thing to say about it. When a
girl near me called to Darren to get his autograph at the Citywalk in LA a
year ago, Brendan yelled at Darren when he tried to give the girl her
autograph. Sad, too, Daz looked really sorry!). Anyway, I guess the only place
to send for autographs would be the same place you send for the official
fanzine:

Savage Garden (Fanmail)
GPO Box 145
Brisbane, Queensland 4001
Australia

But remember this isn't the best way to get them - they get so many letters if
you do get one you'll probably be like 90 years old or something. Well, maybe
not but it would take a while! ~Lauren :o)
